What to charge for tutoring?

A friend just asked me to tutor her 3rd grader in writing.  I was recommended to her because I usually teach the writing classes in our little homeschool co-op.  I have taught at elementary public school and I have been the reading/ writing specialist for K-3rd graders at a public school, so the problem isn't that I don't think I can help.  I just don't know what to charge.

My high schooler has math tutoring for $50-$60/ 45 min session depending on what kind of tutoring is needed.  Her tutor has also taught in our local public school.  I was thinking more along the lines of $40/ 45 minutes. Does this seem like too much to charge for a 3rd grader?   We wouldn't be writing the entire time.  That would be torture for a 9yo.

I know there are some here who tutor.  What is the going rate?

I think it's totally reasonable. I just don't think many homeschoolers here would pay that though, and I'm in an urban, fairly high cost of living area. Especially for early elementary level.
