Amber in SJ
A friend just asked me to tutor her 3rd grader in writing. I was recommended to her because I usually teach the writing classes in our little homeschool co-op. I have taught at elementary public school and I have been the reading/ writing specialist for K-3rd graders at a public school, so the problem isn't that I don't think I can help. I just don't know what to charge. My high schooler has math tutoring for $50-$60/ 45 min session depending on what kind of tutoring is needed. Her tutor has also taught in our local public school. I was thinking more along the lines of $40/ 45 minutes. Does this seem like too much to charge for a 3rd grader? We wouldn't be writing the entire time. That would be torture for a 9yo. I know there are some here who tutor. What is the going rate? Amber in SJ
Ali in OR
That sounds quite reasonable for the bay area. But fair--I don't think I'd go higher.
Harriet Vane
Your charges sound reasonable to me.
Kareni
We live in a relatively low income area. My husband, with his PhD in Chemistry, charges $16.00 an hour to tutor math (through PreCalculus), physical science, and SAT prep. Regards, Kareni
msjones
I've charged $35 an hour for elementary math or reading. I know people who charge $50. My husband has been offered $75/hr to tutor calculus. We are in a major city.

I just don't think many homeschoolers here would pay that though, and I'm in an urban, fairly high cost of living area. Especially for early elementary level. ThatHomeschoolDad
I get $120 for a 2-hour SAT prep session in NE NJ, and I'm a shade on the cheap side for the area.

Julie of KY
I'd consider charging less for a friend. I charge $20/hour for high school math - student travels to me.
JeneralMom
I charged a flat rate of $50 per hour for any tutoring (primary and secondary) and $75 per hour to edit papers but $100 per hour to edit thesis or dissertation.
