Recs for good science videos/series

Recommended Posts

Do any of you have good recommendations for science video series/titles or even YouTube links? I am specifically looking for videos on Oceanography (I have the Cousteau series already) Earth Science and Chemistry. I would also welcome general science series too. We love to use videos as an intro to the units we're doing to get the bigger picture before we study.

For those of you familiar with Bill Nye....is his material geared to my kids' ages?

Many thanks.

Maybe the BBC Planet Earth series or BBC Blue Planet.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/videos for general science and other topics

Maybe some of the HowStuffWorks videos.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/earth For earth science.

If by Earth you also mean astronomy, we really like the BBC Planets series and Discovery's How the Universe Works.

For informal learning on mostly physics and some chemistry topics, our DSs LOVED Mythbusters episodes.

NeoK-12 has compiled series of short (2-5 min. usually) videos. Here is the index of all videos from NeoK-12. Here are specific video collections on the topics you were looking for:

Oceanography:

ocean topics

Earth Science:

earth

types of rocks

volcanoes

water cycle

Chemistry:

acids and bases

chemical reactions

organic chemistry

atoms

periodic table

What's the Disney Imagineering Series?? Kids are Disney fanatics and DD12 wants to be a Disney Imagineer, for real. Do you have a link?

Here is one. There are around 12 I think. We have them all and have watched them many times. My kids love them and they are excellent!

The Disney dvds are crazy expensive.

Agreed. Check your library first. Ours didn't have them, but once we got one, my kids loved them so much I just bought one here and there until I had them all. And they watch them over and over, so money well spent for us!

We've used most of what's already been suggested and second all of them. Adding on:

http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/welcome.html - great site on oceanography

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/physics/hunting-elements.html - two-hour Nova ScienceNow on the periodic table (we watched it over several days). The Boys loved it.

My kids love Bill Nye. Check your library for videos, they are also very expensive from Disney. You can find some clips from his shows on YouTube.
