Update on my ds

Some of you may remember that in March my ds college freshman lost a close friend to suicide, after she confessed her intention to him. I wanted to give a quick update on how he's been doing since, now that the semester is over. He took on a large academic load, with 5 courses, three with labs, one he did not take the pre-requisite for. He did return to school after her funeral, which was just before spring break. He managed to reschedule the midterm he missed despite his prof's seeming disorganization.

He finished the semester! I am SO proud of him and I know he had a hard, hard time. He didn't fail any courses or have to withdraw. Grades not quite as good as first semester, but who cares. He got through it which was a major accomplishment under the circumstances. I think he learned a hard lesson about overcommitting himself, but that real lesson here is that life is fragile. We don't know why people do what they do and we have to live every day fully.

Thanks to everyone who so kindly offered me supportive words when I first posted about this. And hug your babies, big and small.

Oh, gosh. I'm so, so sorry. We had a suicide prevention speaker on the campus where I work -- just two weeks after a beloved student had taken his life. It was so hard.

Good for your son, carrying on and doing it well. Now that the semester is over and he has some space and time to breathe, I hope he is able to care for himself and grieve in whatever way is meaningful to him.

Glad to read the update. Life is both hard and fragile, but also precious and wonderful. May your son (and all of our loved ones) see the latter even after a terrible experience. Glad he was able to press on and do well in spite of one of the toughest valleys we humans can go through.
