Alte Veste Academy
I have purchased a used SL Core F and want to add to it, to turn it into a full secular world geography study. I love the diversity and "feel" of SL's book choices, and I am looking for similar chapter books for the Western Hemisphere. I know there have been many threads about literature selections for world geography, but it it seems that those tend toward picture books or non-fiction recommendations. I am looking for Sonlighty books. :tongue_smilie: Any ideas?
Lori D.
This site lists chronological historical fiction, by age for gr. 1-8, broken down by continent. So, for your Western Hemisphere, there are categories for: U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, West Indies, and Europe. Here's a literature-based geography book list put together by WTMer TracyMirko. Here's a European History booklist, arranged chronologically, with specific country noted for each. It is a mix of non-fiction AND historical fiction. And here's one that has books based on setting in each of the 50 states of the U.S.: 50 States Book List (oops -- just realized that last one is all picture books). Some past threads with ideas: Book list sorted by country/culture? Book list for culture/country study Searching for books set in a particular country Travel/Country themed chapter books Canadian History or Geography related picture books-- a number of historical fiction ideas for Canada, not just picture books You might also check through current Sonlight core book lists and pull in works from other cores that focus on Western Hemisphere. Also, check this chronological list of older SL books and just pull titles that fit the time/country you are interested in. Below is a sample I pulled from that list from the grammar and logic stage lists. BEST of luck in finding books for your Western Hemisphere study! Warmest regards, Lori D. dragons in the flower bed
You might also consider WinterPromise's Children Around the World for Older Learners curriculum, which uses literature to cover the whole world.
