Tests and more tests and surgery for dh

Recommended Posts

Finally getting somewhere.

The gastroenterologist looked at results of Hida scan (on gall bladder). The report and the Dr. recommend surgery to remove. So off to see surgeon. Gastro doc also ordering a gastric emptying study. And the endoscope is scheduled for next wed.

I'm happy to have some real progress being made, but very very annoyed at that GP who would. not. listen. to dh (or even talk to me) for 6 weeks. He (the GP) got sidetracked by the mono and basically just quit listening to dh.

Navigating the medical field is a nightmare. I think of myself as fairly capable...I don't know how some people that I think of as less capable could handle this! I finally took over on the phone calls to/from doctors as well as dealing with the disability people....what do people do who have no one?

It is exhausting but you have to keep pushing sometimes. I'm still worn out from my Mom, my Grandma and my Dh (he has recurrent cellulitis in one leg and by pushing for a second opinion he stayed out of the hospital with it this time) and myself.

I'm so glad you are getting some answers and some help. :grouphug:

progress is good. i hope he's feeling way better really soon.

you described how i felt about the immigration system, too. both dh and i are highly educated, english is our mother language, and we still had trouble figuring out what was needed.

hth,

:grouphug:. It is hard to be the advocate for better care...I often wonder why some docs are even practicing...

Oh, I am so disgusted by that GP. And trust me I have no issue with GPS...I know a lot of really smart ones....and my cousin is a PA and honestly I feel like he helped us more over the phone than this stupid GP. We practically BEGGED the GP for a Hida scan and he got all 'oh are you the doctor? Are you self-diagnosing?

If he had let me in the exam room from the very beginning much of this could have been avoided I think. Dh has been so sick that he doesn't really get his thots out properly IMO. He forgets important facts and details and he has downplayed the pain, and overall sickness a lot.

This is why sick people need someone to help them! Good grief I am so aggravated this morning. I better off the computer and get some work done!

how our needier members of society deal with this - the elderly, non-English speakers, those without insurance, people who have addictions, or even people who just aren't very bright. It must be so hard.

:iagree: Sending in a card with the symptoms and concerns can help a patient get the information to the doctor. I don't understand why you couldn't go into the exam with him.

I hope he feels better soon. It's ridiculous how long this diagnosis took.

I know! That is what I keep thinking.

During the 6 weeks that we couldn't get anything done I often heard people say, 'well I would find another doctor!' THAT is no small matter! The GP referred us to an infectious disease specialist....I began calling them to see when our appt would be. They said, 'your dh's file is on the doctors desk. When he reviews it he will decide if he will see your dh. At that point it will take a least a month to get you in to see him.' Well, we called daily for a while hoping to be the squeaky wheel that got greased...same story every day for over a week. In the meantime dh was getting sicker by the day. Eventually the GP 'allowed' dh to come back in for an office visit and it was then that they called the ID specialist and found out that they had just looked over my dh's chart and dismissed it without even a phone call to us.

Maddening!

Then that day the GP decides maybe dh needs to see a gastro doctor. So he gets him an appt for 3 weeks out. The next day I called the gastro and pleaded dh's case...she said, 'one moment.' She was gone for a minute or two and came back and said, 'can you be here next Tuesday?' I was grateful I about started crying. And this doctor and his staff has been nothing but helpful since day one. So they are out there.

Those of you who have doctors you trust and depend on be thankful!
