daisylou
I have 2 in public school...1 in 1st and 1 in 2nd. It is a small country school that we have liked thus far. I have noticed my 2nd grader's spelling tests are multiple choice. Is this common for other schools? When I think spelling, I don't think multiple choice and I don't know how to address this with the teacher.
Roadrunner
Our school doesn't use multiple choice tests for spelling. The teacher dictates words and sentences.
eloquacious
Unless this is a form of test prep, I think that's ridiculous. And even then, it should be a rare thing!
daisylou
I know they do dictation in 1st grade. I'm afraid it is a test prep thing, and unfortunately I'm afraid it will be the norm and not rare:-( We have confrences next week, so I will address it then. Any ideas how to approach the subject? I don't like challenging authority!;-)
Word Nerd
No. My 2nd grader has 15 or 16 words per week and has to write all the words as well as use selected ones in a sentence on the Friday test (in addition to practice exercises and sentences during the week). SKL
My kids (1st grade) have their spelling words dictated to them and they spell them out, for the weekly test. However, I did notice that there were some reading exercises where they were supposed to fill in the bubble of the word that was an actual word. It seemed a bit stupid to me, because a 6-year-old does not know all the words in the English language and might mistake the pronunciation (hence phonetic spelling) of some they do know. What exactly is the value in a 6yo knowing that "het" is not a word?
Caroline
My second grader has her 20 words dictated to her and she writes them. I think the class has a common 10 words, and then the other ten are differentiated based on the pretest on Monday.
StellaZhang
The spelling test at my kid's school includes both dictation and mutilple choice. The mutiple choice questions are intended to get the kids familiar with the state test questions.
