sagira
We need to learn how to sew. I cannot even sew a button. Ds is 8, and dd is an able 4. I am 35  and need simple, colorful, step by step directions. I want to sew for practical use. I have no use for a tiny pillow. The Klutz guides look great, but the Sewing one seems out of print  Can someone recommend a great sewing kit (with materials included) that fits the above description? In addition, if someone has the Klutz sewing kit in mint condition, can you please sell it to me? :D Edited February 28, 2012 by sagira
KristenR
You just reminded me that there was a neat vintage book recommendation on here that someone posted awhile ago. It was a cute late 1800's or early 1900's text on basic sewing introduction. I thought I had saved the link somewhere. :glare: Yet, I'm obviously not that together yet. So if anyone has it and can pass it on I would appreciate it. :D For what it's worth, it was on books.google.com
kathkath
I find youtube a great source for learning things like that.
LinRTX
I don't have a book, but youtube is a great resource. I do have an idea however. I'm not certain if you want to use a sewing machine, but one of my daughter's first projects at 7 was a bandanna quilt. We just sewed the square bandannas together, sandwiched the top together with a piece of fabric and filler, sewed over the seams again (to quilt it), then sewed a big button in the middle of each square. It took several weeks (did not work all day or everyday), but she still uses this at almost 12. You can make it any size you want, using as many squares as you want. sagira
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to have to look up that book on Google Books. I was thinking of learning to sew by hand first (in case there are no sewing machines available, like at college for the kids), then if we continue to be interested, get a standard sewing machine. No pre-made kits you like? :bigear:
MamaBear
:lurk5:My daughter and I have started sewing simple projects together but never thought about "sewing kits" with everything included. That would make things much easier for newbie seamstresses:)
cmarango
Winky Cherry has a basic kit that your 4 year old can do. It introduces the basic materials and teaches how to sew 2 pieces of felt together with a needle and embroidery thread and then stuff it. Very simple stuff...just an introduction. My dd has made various animal shapes that she still plays with after a few months. ETA: I found my blog entry about this kit. helena
Hmm... I can't think of anything that fits your description, but maybe you'd like one of these? A vintage book: Mary Francis Sewing Book http://www.amazon.com/Frances-Sewing-100th-Anniversary-Story-Instruction/dp/1937564010/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330460802&sr=1-1 Haven't tried this one, but we LOVE her gardening book: http://www.amazon.com/See-Sew-Sewing-Book-Children/dp/1584794917/ref=pd_sim_b_2 http://www.amazon.com/My-First-Patchwork-Book-Machine/dp/0935278486/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330460895&sr=1-1 ETA: Another one that has excellent color photos is Singer Sewing Essentials (I have an older version): http://www.amazon.com/Singer-New-Sewing-Essentials-Updated/dp/1589234324/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330461029&sr=1-1 Edited February 28, 2012 by helena
Occasionally
The Mary Frances Sewing Book might work. My DD& got it for Christmas this year as a print book, since their patterns have been updated to fit American Girl dolls. Here's the Amazon link to that one.
