Denisemomof4
I have been doing some reading tonight and am worried. I am not 100% vegan yet, about 95%, but want to go vegan all the way. I started this journey 2.5 months ago. My teeth hurt bad and I am certain I have at least two cavities. Isn't it too soon for this?
In the Rain
Why would being vegan cause cavities? I haven't heard of that.
Jenny in Florida
I'm afraid I don't even understand why this would be a concern? My kids have been vegan since birth, and neither has ever had a cavity. What do you think would be missing that would be a problem?
Quiver0f10
I was a vegan for quite a while and never had any issues with my teeth. I am not sure of the connection?
NicAnn
Ditto what others have posted. I've been vegan for years and have amazing teeth. Dh hasn't had a cavity since going mostly vegan 3 years ago, and Dd has awesome teeth too. What research has you concerned?

Denisemomof4
I have read in magazines, other literature, and also online on the link of weak/decaying teeth and veganism. I wish I could tell you where I read..... I just do not remember!

ssavings
Make sure you're getting enough calcium. I think it's around 1000 mgs/day recommended!
redsquirrel
are you sure your teeth don't hurt due to sinus pain? Generally, cavities are discovered long before they become painful. And, after watching my dentist watch a spot on my son's tooth for 6 years I think it takes a while for a cavity to develop. Certainly a lot longer than 2.5 months. Dental carries are caused by bacteria. There are things we can do to create healthy bacterial growth. Cut down on sticky foods, like crackers, to give less food to the bacteria that cause cavities. I have a lot of sinus pain and I often feel like my teeth ache.
Crimson Wife
We aren't vegans but we did go dairy-free back in December. Most store bought non-dairy milks (rice, almond, coconut, hemp, flaxseed, etc.) are fortified with calcium. Now if you don't drink those or if you make your own at home, then getting enough calcium might be an issue.
HappyLady
I'm vegan and have no teeth issues. As a matter of fact, I have a fear of the dentist so I hadn't gone to one in at least 5 years and after giving me my exam both the hygienist and the dentist said they were amazed at how nice my teeth were after having not been to the dentist in so long. :D And on a side note, I have a funny story about my teeth. A few years ago I was getting my car repaired. The repair shop has a little diner connected to it so I went and had something to drink while waiting for my car. This woman came up to me and asked if I could give her directions somewhere. I did and then out of no where she said, "You have nice teeth." :001_huh: It was definitely odd, but I do get complimented on them all the time. :001_smile:
