joannqn
ETA: Apparently, Snopes says we can't trust the Telegraph for legitimate information. I would have never guessed. Please disregard. I can't believe this. Story from the UK Telegraph Since Germany made prostitution and other sex industry jobs legal, unemployment centres may now cut benefits to those who refuse to take an offered job as a prostitute or attend an interview for a nude model, etc. One disturbing line from the article: "The new regulations say that working in the sex industry is not immoral any more, and so jobs cannot be turned down without a risk to benefits." Mergath
Wow. I'm one who thinks that it's pointless to criminalize prostitution, but at the same time, certainly no one should ever be forced to do it. I wonder if this only applies to single women, or if married women get forced into it, too? Not that it is okay either way, but you'd think they'd be above forcing women to commit adultery while at work.
Mrs Mungo
Woah. Legalizing it in Germany made sense for some specific reasons, but that is a pretty bad side effect.
regentrude
Please check snopes before spreading incorrect information. http://www.snopes.com/media/notnews/brothel.asp What is true is that the sex industry is not illegal and can legally put out job offers. What is not true is that an unemployed woman must accept such a job or will lose her benefits. Any job offer can be turned down for important reasons, and unwillingness to engage in prostitution is of course considered an important reason by the unemployment agency. Bang!Zoom!
I guess first of all, I'd want to vet the source of that information. Second thought, it's not limited to females as an industry in the most clinical sense of the word.

I was wondering if there was more to it.

It didn't occur to me that I'd have to check snopes for a story in a legitimate newspaper.

How did the Telegraph recycle their *own* false story? The new one that the OP linked is the same one from 2005.

I wouldn't want to be unemployed in Germany in the future. Of course I'm almost fifty.......I can't imagine I'd make any kind of money in prostitution..
