ChristusG
I was in the ER for gallstones. They prescribed me hydrocodone..... Can I nurse my 2 month old? I hope so...she doesn't take bottles. How long should I wait to nurse after taking the med?
Melissa in Australia
can you ring the ER and ask?
ktgrok
yes, you can nurse. It is given to moms after c sections all the time, that are nursing newborns. And for future reference, And don't ask the ER, ask the infant risk center: http://www.infantrisk.com/

The docs often don't know any more than you about this and will say no to protect themselves.http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT Edited December 26, 2011 by joyofsix

The oral surgeon kind of freaked out at the nursing question. He told me not to nurse while I was on ANYTHING he prescribed. I called the lactation consultant at the hospital with all of the specific meds (IV knockout drugs and the after-care narcotics). They did suggest I pump and dump the first feeding after the knockout drugs, just because it might make baby extra sleepy. But, I was on the narcotics for almost a week (dry socket.... fun) and I was able to nurse the whole time.
mommymilkies
It's ok. I had it after my ear surgery at 4 months pp. :grouphug: Obviously watch for any bad signs, but some babies might act slightly sleepy, some aren't affected at all.
