QuirkyKidAcademy
And how would you address it? My friend's 8yo son: reads on level, math skills are fine, can memorize and regurgitate pieces (like the Lord's Prayer) But he cannot put vocabulary words and definitions together either verbally or written (word bank type test). Orally, he comes out with something that makes no sense in the context of the vocab. Written, he just mixes up the entire lot of words. That's not the end of the world, but she wonders if it is indicative of some bigger processing type disorder. Any insight?
myfunnybunch
Interesting. That must be frustrating for the poor guy! Your friend might want to check out A Mind at a Time by Mel Levine. He breaks down different learning challenges, has information about how to try to figure out what's going on and some general idaes on how to address them. QuirkyKidAcademy
Thanks, Cat. I will pass that on.
honeymommy4
Maybe there is a different way to present or learn the definitiions. Are they doing it orally? on paper? Hard to say without knowing this. My DS is almost 8 and even his simple spelling book can mix him up sometimes - because of the context of one of the words... QuirkyKidAcademy
That's a good point, honeymommy4. I didn't think to ask her that, but I will tomorrow. Thanks!
gardenmom5
has he seen a speech pathologist? I always thought it was about pronuciation - but my son did a speech eval last week as part of his work-up and many of those were things it was evaluating. It is more "communication", than "speech". QuirkyKidAcademy
Kristen, to my knowledge, he has not seen a speech pathologist. I doubt she could take him either. They just moved across the country for the husband's new job and have really crappy insurance. They are living hand-to-mouth right now, trying to recover from the cost of the trans-continental move. I will mention it to her, though, in case she knows a SP back home or has met one here. Thanks for the feedback!
ondreeuh
Anxiety? My son has a hard time recalling information when he is stressed, and will come out with weird stuff. He just panics and guesses.
QuirkyKidAcademy
Another good point. Thanks, Andrea!

If the service would make a difference for how the child performs academically, they can get that through the school - even if they are homeschooled. QuirkyKidAcademy
I'm weeks late getting back to this, but I'm so glad I did. I didn't know that, Kristen! I will certainly pass it on. Thank you!
Ottakee
Can he understand what he reads at grade level? Just wondering if this is an overall comprehension problem or not. I agree with checking with the schools. Sometimes the free therapy can make a big difference.
