Meriwether
My parents/sister just bought a milk cow! I'd like to get them a butter churn (collectively) for Christmas. Since it would be for all of them, I'm open to expensive models. I have no idea what to look for, though. If you have or have used a butter churn what model would you recommend. Are there any I should NOT consider? I think the vintage/antique/reproduction ones look very cool and they would fit right in at my mom's house. They have a crazy busy household, though, and I wonder if the electric one would be better. So, tell me what you know!:bigear:
Tracy in Ky
I've always just used a blender :). A mixer works okay too. I've never used an actual churn, though we have one that used to belong to dh's grandmother. If you buy a churn, I would recommend an electric one. Bluegoat
The best are the ones that look like this: There are different makes available, and you can get them with electric motors I think. Leaman's has them in their catalogue for $140.
Meriwether
:svengo:I can't tell them to use a blender. What would I get them for Christmas? Seriously, my sister and her family (5 kids) moved in with my parents last spring when BIL got a job close by. They want to live with them until they can pay cash for a nice house. They had been living in a 5,000 sq. ft. house before they moved into my parents 3,000 sq. ft. (already full of stuff) house. Both attics are packed. They have 5 couches. They worked hard to make everything fit and look nice. Even the crib is double stacked with mattresses. They do not need any more "stuff". I was so happy to think of something they could use.:tongue_smilie:

Melissa in Australia
I have an antique wooden one that I use. It looks like a wooden box with a crank handle that sticks out the side. The handle turns wooden paddles. It takes only 5 minutes to turn cream into butter. It is very relaxing, and I can read at the same time as well. I bought it in an antique shop. Meriwether
Five minutes sounds great, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Is this close, melissaL? Edited October 26, 2011 by Meriwether

Melissa in Australia
the second one. the speed of churning the butter all depends on the temp of the cream. I have found it works best with cream at least 24 hours old. I leave it sitting at room temp for about 2-3 hours before churning.
Remudamom
The glass ones with paddles are good. I had one like that and one of the more classic churns with a paddle you had to pump up and down. That one took longer and was more exhausting. The glass one is fun, easy to work and you can see what is happening inside.
