She might like A Short History of Nearly Everything as a fun read. It makes a nice break from deep science. She also might like to grow trilobites! We've done that before. You can get a kit like this: http://www.carolina.com/product/living+organisms/animals/live+crustaceans/living+fossil+%28triops%29+life+cycle+kit.do. (I haven't tried this particular kit.)

Does anyone have any recommedations for studies on fossils and evolution based on fossil evidence? This has always been a big interest with my DD and this is one of the topics she has requested now that we have decided to make this year a gap year.

Try searching for "Dry Dredgers". This is a fossil hunting and collectors group based around Cincinnati. They have a great newsletter, which should be archived at their website. The frequently do book reviews.

Is Carolina shipping from the Paleozoic now?

Oh, those are triops, not trilobites.
