cam112198 Posted October 4, 2011 Share Posted October 4, 2011 We have pretty much always used CLE for Math. My plan has always been to switch over to Saxon for the upper levels. I like the idea of the Dive cds. It takes a little bit off of me. My dd went from CLE 306 into Saxon 5/4. So far, Saxon 5/4 seems a little easier than CLE 306, but she seems to be missing quite a few. She complains that math is taking too long and is asking to go back to our "old math" (CLE). What would you do? She is a 4th grader, but I feel like if we went back to CLE we would have to go back to 306. Do you think she is missing problems b/c the explanations are not as clear? I do miss how the light units were so open and go and all in one place. Not sure what to do. If I'm going to switch back, I want to go ahead and do it now. Any suggestions? One way to speed things up a bit, but not miss anything new is to do two lessons but on the first lesson, only do the new teaching not the "we remember" part. Then on the second lesson, do the entire lesson including the "we remember". I wouldn't do that all the time but it can speed you through a bit if you think she knows it already or can handle it. ondreeuh Posted October 4, 2011 Share Posted October 4, 2011 My son finished CLE 4th grade math, we did some review over the summer, and he placed at lesson 40 in Saxon 54, even though there were only a couple things that he hadn't already "mastered" with CLE. I think CLE gives a lot more "hints" with the format than Saxon does. Saxon requires them to pull it out of their memory with less to go on, and that's where ds froze. Even though the topics may be review, it's a different way of asking. Personally, I think if my kiddo can do something in one program but not in another, then his understanding is shallow. So we are going ahead with Saxon 54 and letting him get more practice. I had no complaints with CLE when we were using it. mytwomonkeys Posted October 4, 2011 Share Posted October 4, 2011 my daughter is in 4th grade & we use CLE too. we switched in 2nd grade from R&S and we had to begin that entire year over (As CLE was covering stuff we had not even touched upon). she still hasn't caught up because of it and is only in 306 now. i did add in times tales, and we just finished that this week. now we use the flashcards to drill times tables and division facts daily. in that regard, we are slightly ahead of the LU she is in, but i know it will benefit her greatly in the end. i say go back to CLE and place her where you left off :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If I took a placement test for CLE and didn't test into the 400 level (which I doubt we would), would it let me know what LU in the 300 level to start with? I guess I should just start where we left off. Even if I started there, it's been 5 months since we've done CLE math. She may have forgotten some things. I would go back to CLE. Why wouldn't you? In the Saxon numbering system, 5/4 is for an average 5th grader/advanced 4th grader. If your dd was basically halfway through CLE 3rd grade, I'd imagined she missed some things. Did you do any placement testing? Tara I did do a placement test, but the Saxon placement test is a little confusing, IMO. On the K-3 placement test, she got them all right so it said to start at Level 3. The upper level (5/4 and up) is a separate placement test. She couldn't really do any of them, so it told us to start at level 5/4. I guess I did the right thing. I called Art Reed, and he told me to place her in the 5/4 level. I didn't realize that 5/4 was a 5th grade/advanced 4th grade program. That does make me feel better and explains why she isn't doing so well. It does introduce different ways of breaking down equations and really makes him think of math and numbers. It works, so we'll stick with it the whole ride through. So very true! I had dd9 take the CLE placement test today to make sure that she didn't test out of the 300 level, and she didn't. So we will pick up where we left off.
