Caterpiller
At what age do you start correcting a child to use their pointer finger to point with?
table4five
LOL! My dd9 did this up until she was about 7 I think. We would kind of point at what she was pointing at so she could see us point with the index finger. I don't know if that worked or not, but she did grow out of it. It was comical at times. I am glad she grew out of it.
OrganicAnn
I was going to say 6, 7, 8 range - young enough to form a new habit.
Garga
I started them very early. Around 3 or 4. It is easier to point with your middle finger, because it's the longest one, so it's closest to what you're pointing to. I really wish that we could use our middle fingers for more things without insulting everyone in the room. :)
blessedmom4god
My youngest does this, I thought it was a family trait since dh says his grandfather pointed like that. We haven't tried to correct it, we think it is cute and unique...umm sure hope he has never offended anyone :tongue_smilie:
katilac
As soon as it happens ;) I try to discourage pointing in general, as most kids struggle with remembering not to point at people. It's easier for them to just not be in the habit of pointing.
Oak Knoll Mom
I just explain to the kids that in our culture, it's considered rude and ask them to not point with their middle finger. I don't get into why it's considered rude. I start the first time they point with that finger.
bettyandbob
I thought my youngest was the only kid that did this. He's 10, but has obvious disabilities. There are so many things he needs, correcting this is a low priority.

LidiyaDawn
I don't see it as rude to POINT with that finger…. pointing isn't the same thing as flipping someone the bird. It's like sticking out your tongue to catch snowflakes versus sticking it out *at someone*.
Princess Peach
Ok, who else has that episode of Seinfeld in their head now. The one where the waitress at the coffee shop points at the menu with her middle finger and George gets all upset!
