Wendi
I would like ds to read and write about current events throughout high school. I'm thinking of having him read the newspaper, news magazines, etc., maybe occasionally do a little online research, and write one short piece once a week or every other week on something currently in the news. If we do this for all four years, he'll have at least enough for a credit. What would I call it? Is Current Events an acceptable credit, or is there a better name? Any suggestions? Julie in MN
Our local high school has a course called Current Issues. It is one semester for grades 11 or 12. Here is the description: In this course we will be looking at a variety of current issues. Having students become informed citizen in our global society is the main goal of this course. The current events of the time will determine the main focus of this class. Specific reoccurring issues, such as, crime, discrimination, globalization, and problems of mass society will be studied as the framework of this class. This course will give students the opportunity to analyze the forces that are affecting our lives now and in the future. Another (more advanced) school near us has a course called Contemporary Issues.
Photo Ninja
Contemporary World Affairs is a good name for this course.
angela in ohio
Contemporary World Affairs is a good name for this course. That would be my choice. If you focus on political events only, you could call it Modern Political Studies instead.
LilBlueMouse
I'm glad to see the question. I was debating the same issue for this year. Thanks:lurk5:

Mom22ns
When I was in high school, I took Contemporary Issues. That is what I would name it. It was one of my all time favorite classes too!

LilBlueMouse
You might want to check with a local newspaper or tv station and see if they have any tours. You could start the class with a field trip to see how it all starts. :001_smile:
