Current Events as an elective? What would I call it?

Recommended Posts

I would like ds to read and write about current events throughout high school. I'm thinking of having him read the newspaper, news magazines, etc., maybe occasionally do a little online research, and write one short piece once a week or every other week on something currently in the news.

If we do this for all four years, he'll have at least enough for a credit. What would I call it? Is Current Events an acceptable credit, or is there a better name? Any suggestions?

Our local high school has a course called Current Issues. It is one semester for grades 11 or 12. Here is the description:

In this course we will be looking at a variety of current issues. Having students become informed citizen in our global society is the main goal of this course. The current events of the time will determine the main focus of this class. Specific reoccurring issues, such as, crime, discrimination, globalization, and problems of mass society will be studied as the framework of this class. This course will give students the opportunity to analyze the forces that are affecting our lives now and in the future.

Another (more advanced) school near us has a course called Contemporary Issues.
