woolybear
I am planning a geography/world studies for next year. I am looking for good read aloud fiction about or placed in New Zealand and any in the Pacific Islands. I would like chapter books, but am open to hearing picture book suggestions as well. My boys will be 9 and 11. thank you.
Murmer
Whale Rider is a contemporary piece that is very interesting...although you may want to preread to see if there is anything that is offensive to you. Also I would look at some of the Maori tales of how New Zealand came to be.
kubiac
I don't know what "R/A" means, but if you're looking for local myths and legends, there are a bunch of out-of-print books written and published by a guy named A.W. Reed. He covers folklore from what is now New Zealand, Australian and Oceania/Polynesia.

Chris in VA
Call It Courage by Armstrong Sperry would be an excellent choice.
