Teresa in MO
my 10 yo ds has had a cold all week. It started complaining a couple of hours ago about his ear hurting. I went to Walgreens for ear relief drops. They don't have them. Any ideas what I can usee to ease the pain. I will not be able to take him to the doctor until tomorrow. HiddenJewel
Onion works great. I use a piece of cut raw onion at the top of the opening. Elevating the head really helps too. We also use garlic oil. A friend uses it warm. (This obviously is not to be taken as medical advice.)

Jen in PA
I tend to avoid antibiotics for ear issues and try a combo of pain relievers and decongestants (for us that means ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine), plus sleeping propped up.
maddykate
I know this sounds really strange, but we use a potato. Cut the potato in half and mircrowave it for 20 seconds or so until it is warm/hot (not so hot that it can burn you, but really warm). Put the warmed potato over the ear and it will provide almost instant relief. We do this any time any of us have an earache and it works every time. 5sons
We do warm olive oil and then place a piece of raw garlic in the ear. My oldest ds (11) had and ear infection after a cold two months ago. Never had to use oral meds. Better in 24hrs. Hope your ds feels better soon! Kristen
RanchGirl
I once did the garlic thing in my son's ear and it cleared up his pain overnight. I was amazed!!
TCB
Ibuproden and tylenol can both be used, and in fact work even better together than each on it's own. They're completely different meds so can both be taken without ill effects.
kchara
I second the olive oil. You can buy sweet oil at the pharmacy... but it's just olive oil in a smaller and more expensive container. ;) I haven't used the garlic yet, as we don't have all that many ear infections, but next one, I plan on it!! missmoe
If you want to try garlic, instead of placing a piece of garlic in the ear try grating garlic and then squeezing the juice from the grated garlic to put in the ear.
HiddenJewel
We have found onion to work better than garlic for ear aches.
The Governess
My Pediatrician told me to have my dd chew gum to encourage the ear to drain. It worked! Heat and ibuprofen helped with the immediate pain until the pressure was relieved.
