Sooner Legends Inn in Norman OK?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever stayed at the Sooner Legends Inn in Norman, OK?

It's the host hotel for an even I'm attending in a few weeks, and I'm wondering if it's a good family hotel or if I would be better off staying at a chain. I can't get a good feel for it from the website.

While we're at it, any must-see hot spots in Norman?

For Hotspots, are you going with kids or without? Will you want to drive around at all or are you ONLY interested in Norman?

Sooner Legends is ok, I think it used to be a Radisson but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. I would stay there without any concerns. It is older but it is really easy to get anywhere from that location. It is close to the highway/restaurants/mall/college campus.

ETA: If there is an OU sporting event that weekend I would stay somewhere a bit less convenient and get more sleep.

Sam Noble Natural History Museum is on the OU campus. It has lots of dinosaur bones, Native American exhibits, etc... very cool.

Oklahoma Science Museum--The title is self explanatory. They have hands-on exhibits, I-Max, etc.....

I tend to think more science oriented. But, Oklahoma City (VERY close to Norman) also has National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Actually, If I'm remembering right....the science museum, OKC Zoo and the Cowboy Hall of Fame are very close to each other.

I have not been, yet, but there is also the OKC Bombing memorial.

Yes, if you want to drive to OKC the first three are close together and the zoo is one of the better ones in the country. I have been to many zoos and this is one of my favorites. I went to the bombing site when it was still a hole in the ground surrounded by a chain link fence. I was in no way prepared for the emotions that I experienced. It was a deep, viseral pain that brought tears to my eyes. I haven't been since they put in the memorial so I don't know if it would have the same impact now.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

I am going with my 12-yo. We will be there for the weekend, I will have one weekend day free to sightsee.

I'm thinking that Natural History museum looks pretty cool, or the science museum. Or the weather center. Hmmm... guess we have to decide!

Really, I can't tell you much about Sooner Legends Hotel. It's hard to tell unless you've stayed there. I would guess not bad but not ritzy. They are mostly known for their BBQ restaurant that's inside. (They have all kinds of stuff from the Sooner football team in there, AKA Sooner Legends....)

If you decide to switch hotels, there is a brand new hotel called Country Inn and Suites that seems nice. Also the La Quinta seems nice also. The Embassy Suites is very fancy if you want that.

If I were visiting a museum, I would choose The Sam Noble Natural History Museum absolutely over the Oklahoma Science Museum. Without any shade of a doubt. Natural History Museum is really good, and it's right in Norman.

I would take a drive around the campus, as it is about 1/2 a mile away from the Natural History Museum and really pretty.

The National Weather Center is nice and interesting for kids, but you have to set up a tour, not just show up. It's also in Norman.

I also like the Oklahoma City Arty Museum. The whole third floor is glass-work, and I think it is fascinating and a very nice display. So, not just paintings. It is 30 minutes away.

I'm sure you might have more questions, but I can't think of what else you might want to know.

The Sam Noble Museum is cool and often has awesome exhibits, they have a Mediterranean Exhibit going on now. I was just there not long ago and we really enjoyed it.

The Cowboy Hall of Fame IME is not really as cool as it sounds, there isn't much there. They do have cool art exhibits so you might check for when you are visiting.

The Firehouse Art Center might have fun things going on, it would be worth checking out. You might also see if there is anything going on campus like shows or exhibits.

The Oklahoma Science Museum is *awesome* but it does have a lot of stuff younger kids might like. I think your dd would not be as impressed to see earthquake machines and WALKING THROUGH A HUMAN HEART!! They have touring exhibits like other Science Museums, the last time I was there it was to see the Titanic exhibit.
