Food for a road trip

Recommended Posts

What do you pack to save $ on a long trip? We're looking at a huge drive this summer, and want to keep it as healthy & cheap as we can. We'll have some cooler space, and be able to restock at grocery stores, but I don't want to buy a bunch of prepackaged stuff. Beyond the obvious, like cereal/oatmeal and sandwiches, what else can we bring? Bonus points if I can start buying some items now to spread the cost over a couple of months!

When we travel we tend to throw healthy out the window, we figure it is still healthier than stopping at a fast food joint for every meal.

We pack our cooler with:

Milk

String cheese

lunch meat

cheese slices

mayo

mustard

pickles or relish

Peanut butter

bread

jelly

tortillas for roll ups

For snacks (don't need a cooler)

any boxed crackers

trail mix

potato chips

nuts

dried fruit

And if we really don't care about health, we pack cookies and individual kool-aid packets and water! :tongue_smilie:

We are making that drive next week. Here is what am planning on bringing.

Yogurt

pudding cups (I make my own using the little round tupperwares)

muffins (homemade)

fruit

dried fruit (buy it or make your own)

granola bars (store or homemade, my family likes a oatmeal bar I make that is like rice krispies but with oatmeal and chocolate chips)

I like getting those yogurt tubes (gogurt I think they are called) you can freeze them and they are good for about 4-6 hours before they need eaten or put in the cooler. they are small and don't take up a lot of space which I like.

aside from that I like making sandwich wraps I roll them in plastic wrap and then in tin foil.

other than that, veggies, fruits, trail mix, cereal bars. raisins, dry cranberries, pepitas (pumpkin seeds that are hauled I roast them with soy sauce they are by far my kids fav healthy snack)

Pretty much what everyone else said. The only thing I would add is that, at least in our case, the food needs to live in the trunk for the trip NOT the back seat. Boredom and close proximity to food lent to permasnacking.

We now put the cooler in the trunk or bed even if we have to be crowded with the other stuff.
