In search of a typing program...

I need a typing program for my 13, 11, 10, and 7 year olds. They are using SOS this year, and their lack of typing skills is starting to be a factor.

 

Any suggestions?

Typing Instructor worked great for us. We used the "for Kids" version, but the "Deluxe" might be better for your kids' ages - I think they're pretty much the same programs with different games.

I use Typing Instructor also. I have both the Kids and Deluxe version, but so far my children have only used the Kids version (ages 10 & 12).

 

When my son (the 12 year old) learned the finger placement, I would have him type out the alphabet 5 times and then some Bible verses.

I bought All The Right Type for my children. There is a tutorial and then the practice sessions have different types of space games. I think it was $30 and it downloads directly on to your computer. Both of my children are excited to learn typing on the computer using these games.

I found a typing program for kids online that my kids have enjoyed. I'm not certain you can just use it alone (not enough repetition to get to full memorization I think), but it's fun and free.

Spongebob Squarepants Typing was nice (not intimidating) when my boys were younger. We tried Typing Instructor Deluxe and it was pretty good, though my oldest prefers Typing Quick and Easy.

I would probably let the 7 yo play with Dance Mat Typing. It is slower paced and doesn't go as far, but is a fun introduction.

We bought Type to Learn 4 through Homeschool Buyers co-op. It looks very comprehensive, and covers a range of ages.

 

But dd initially learned how to type using the free BBC programme Dance Mat Typing. It might be too young for your older kids, though.
