Nestof3
I don't want McAfee or Norton. Two times, I have had to rely on Malware Bytes to remove viruses that Bitdefender didn't even detect. Is Malware Bytes a great program in itself? What else is out there that actually works?
Caitilin
On the recommendation of a computer savvy hsing dad, we use AVG free. It's been great for us!
mrs.m
Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and it works!!! I have NEVER had a virus or malware, it catches them! http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Delighted3
AVG free works great here, too. We've used it for years. HTH, Joy
Margo out of lurking
Free: AVIRA, along with Windows Defender. There are several excellent, free options. Look at recommendations on Kim Komando or CNET websites.

That is what we use after my dh saw it recommended in Consumer Reports.
vonfirmath
Note: Malware and viruses are two different types of things. I've had to use Malwarebytes to remove stuff that McAfee didn't detect as well -- because mcAfee is a virus detector and malwarebytes deals with malware. I know that they both seem like viruses to us, when the malware is not something we want (Some people choose to install malware! Believe it or not). But they are different

I wanted to add it is so much better than Norton to McAfee because it is NOT a memory hog like they are.
Nestof3
I thought Trojan and Vista Antivirus virus were both viruses. This http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php got rid of both. My Bitdefender didn't find either one. The Vista antivirus was malicious and included about 20 files. Note: Malware and viruses are two different types of things. vonfirmath
The Antivirus thing is actually malware -- or rather, a rogue anti-spyware program (That's what I got) Antivirus 2009 or something like that. Don't know about Trojan.
