Perry
Anyone have a link to a good one? I've been looking and I'm finding lots of contemporary lit, but I can't find anything I'd consider high quality. I haven't read a lot of YA books, so I'm having a hard time knowing what's good. I've got plenty for high school, but need something for grades 7/8/9. maryr
Also, what types of books are you looking for? any particular interests? I can give you quite a few good suggestions but I don't have a book list. mary
Michelle My Bell
I just used sonlight's catalog to compile a list for my daughter. I then went to scholoastic.com and bookadventure.com and looked up the grade levels of the books. I eliminated some and then arranged them how I wanted them. Caroline
I use the books from LCC. And my son's school has had reasonable requests, too including Animal Farm, The Giver, Fahrenheit 451, A Separate Peace, Anthem, and The Chosen. (Those are all I can remember off the top of my head.) 6packofun
I like to Google "Christian middle school summer reading list" and use lists that schools put together. Normally I wouldn't necessarily trust a public school, so I hope that a Christian school might have higher standards. (You could also look for a Classical school's summer reading list.) Anyhow, here is a good selection: Fiction Books Author Title Adams -Watership Down Alcott, Louisa May- Little Women Avi -True Confessions of Charlotte Davis Babbit, Natalie -Tuck Everlasting Barry & Pearson -Peter and the Star Catchers (series) Baum, Frank -Wizard of Oz, The Boyne, John -Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Bradbury, Ray- Martian Chronicles, The Burnett, Frances -Secret Garden, The Christie, Agatha -And Then There Were None Christie, Agatha -Death on the Nile Christie, Agatha -Murder on the Orient Express Dickens, Charles- Oliver Twist Dodge, Mary -Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates Doyle, Arthur C. -Hound of the Baskervilles, The Doyle, Arthur C. -Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Dumas, Alexandre -Three Musketeers DuMaurier, Daphne -Rebecca DuPrau, Jeanne -City of Ember, The Edgerton -Walking Across Egypt Enright, Elizabeth -Gone Away Lake Funke, Cornelia -Thief Lord, The George, Jean Craighead -My Side of the Mountain Gilbreth & Carey -Cheaper by the Dozen Goldman, William- Princess Bride, The Graham, L.B. -Binding of the Blade, The (series) Hamilton, Virginia -House of Dies Drear Hansberry, Lorraine -Raisin in the Sun Hemingway, Ernest -Old Man and the Sea, The Herriot, James -All Creatures Great and Small Heyerdahl, Thor -Kon-Tiki Hiassen, Carl -Hoot Holt, Kimberly Willis -When Zachary Beaver Came to Town Jaques, Brian -Redwall (series) Kay, Elizabeth -Divide, The Keith, Harold -Rifles for Waitie Kipling, Rudyard -Captains Courageous L'Engle, Madeleine -Wrinkle in Time, A Levine, Gail Carson -Fairest Lewis, C. Hillary in KS
I created a list for all three of my boys. (Rising 9th, 4th, and 1st graders) I scanned the Veritas Press catalog and the summer reading lists from Highland Latin School. Maybe these will give you some ideas? Here's what my rising 9th grader is reading this summer: Mr. Midshipman Hornblower Johnny Tremain All Creatures Great and Small The Scarlet Pimpernel The Dragon and the Raven The Eagle of the Ninth The Secret Garden The Black Stallion The Hunt for Red October Liberty and Tyranny According to Plan (This one is a book about Biblical theology by Graeme Goldworthy. Ds wanted me to add it "for fun.") Edited June 2, 2010 by Hillary in KS
gingersmom
I just google 7th grade reading list, 8th grade reading list, etc and start reading through and jotting down names. Then I usually go over to amazon.com to see what the reviews are. Then I go to paperback swap to see what I can get for free. :001_smile: I did have a summer reading list but now we are doing school year round so I guess it is not technically a summer reading list. Here were my planned books- 7th going into 8th- Pinocchio Criss Cross The Watsons Go to Birmingham Bud, Not Buddy Cheaper by the Dozen Roll of Thunder, Hear My cry 4th going into 5th- Hank Zipzer Chitty Chitty Bang Bang George Washingtons Socks Stone Fox
