I need a middle school summer reading list.

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a link to a good one? I've been looking and I'm finding lots of contemporary lit, but I can't find anything I'd consider high quality. I haven't read a lot of YA books, so I'm having a hard time knowing what's good.

I've got plenty for high school, but need something for grades 7/8/9.

Also, what types of books are you looking for? any particular interests?

I can give you quite a few good suggestions but I don't have a book list.

mary

Both.

Dd will be in 8th grade, strong reader, no particular interests.

Ds will be in 7th grade, dislikes reading and reads below grade level. Likes sports and adventure.

Thanks!

I like to Google "Christian middle school summer reading list" and use lists that schools put together. Normally I wouldn't necessarily trust a public school, so I hope that a Christian school might have higher standards. (You could also look for a Classical school's summer reading list.)

Anyhow, here is a good selection:

I created a list for all three of my boys. (Rising 9th, 4th, and 1st graders)

I scanned the Veritas Press catalog and the summer reading lists from Highland Latin School.

Maybe these will give you some ideas?

Here's what my rising 9th grader is reading this summer:

Mr. Midshipman Hornblower

Johnny Tremain

All Creatures Great and Small

The Scarlet Pimpernel

The Dragon and the Raven

The Eagle of the Ninth

The Secret Garden

The Black Stallion

The Hunt for Red October

Liberty and Tyranny

According to Plan (This one is a book about Biblical theology by Graeme Goldworthy. Ds wanted me to add it "for fun.")

I just google 7th grade reading list, 8th grade reading list, etc and start reading through and jotting down names. Then I usually go over to amazon.com to see what the reviews are. Then I go to paperback swap to see what I can get for free. :001_smile:

I did have a summer reading list but now we are doing school year round so I guess it is not technically a summer reading list.

Here were my planned books-

7th going into 8th-

Pinocchio

Criss Cross

The Watsons Go to Birmingham

Bud, Not Buddy

Cheaper by the Dozen

Roll of Thunder, Hear My cry

4th going into 5th-

Hank Zipzer

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

George Washingtons Socks

Stone Fox
