Rebecca
Do you do anything special with your produce when you wash it? Sometimes I feel a little yuck about germs etc. on our lettuce and other veggies/fruits. I am wondering if there is something I am missing and a good way to really clean it. Thanks! abbeyej
No. My MIL washes her produce in a very dilute bleach solution (not sure of the proportions -- it's very little bleach). That makes me more uncomfortable than the thought of a wee bit of dirt I might miss though. :) There are Veggie Wash solutions you can buy as well. I'm a fan of organic produce washed in water though.:)
Rebecca
Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that some people do a vinegar soak? I would never use bleach. Blek. Thanks again, Rebecca
mo2
I have heard of people adding a splash of vinegar to their water. I myself just wash in plain water though.
Gretchen in NJ
I do use vinegar or salt with water when I clean my leaf greens. I only use the vinegar on lettuce when it looks a tiny bit wilted. I was watching "Good Eats" once when he recommended it. I mostly use salt and water to clean my veggies.
NanceXToo
plain old water here, too :)
Perry
I just use water and a salad spinner for lettuce. I use Fit for things like apples, grapes and broccoli.
Orthodox6
plain water for greens. a "vegetable spray"* for fruits and vegetables. * In another thread, some are complaining about the use of this word or that word. So here I shall voice my disgust with the mal-begotten word "veggie".
Sandra in FL
grapes, cherries, etc. For salads, I try to buy organic.
babs
one filled with hydrogen peroxide and the other with white vinegar. Squirt with both thoroughly, let sit for 2 minutes or so, then rinse. Supposed to be a great germ killer - what do y'all think? Been doing it for years as it is cheaper than veg sprays.
