jujsky
I'm making an R2D2 cake for a little boy who is very dear to my heart (my best friend's son, and according to DD, her future husband :001_wub:). I'm stacking several round cakes and half of the a ball cake for the body, making rice crispy treats for the legs, and I'm frosting the whole thing and covering it in fondant. I've made lots of cakes, so none of that is new to me -- all old-hat ;). My hang-up is how to do all of the silver and blue decorations on the body. Has anyone used decorator gel to paint on fondant before? Do I thin it? What could I use for the silver portions since to my knowledge they don't make silver decorator gel? If there are any great products to use or tips you could give me, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
LisaKinVA
They do make a silver "luster dust" -- which I believe can be mixed with a clear decorator gel and used as paint... I'd have to look it up, though.
Mrs Mungo
I think cake decorators usually use powdered food coloring mixed with vodka to paint on fondant. You can get metallic dusts that brush on.

Then you may be able to get some shimmer from either clear edible glitter (will glitter stick to fondant?) or a light painting of clear gel to make the grey shiny. I am not certain how the gel would hold up on that high of a vertical plane though. It seems like it would slip off. Sounds like you need a trial run. For the blue you may need to do that in another thin layer of fondant or cut/piece it together. That sounds like a fun project!
Lisa in Jax
I agree with Tap. I'd tint the fondant gray and use that luster dust on it. If you google "R2D2" cakes, there are a lot of examples, and one site had tips/hints. Post pictures when you're done! Lisa
Annie G
I'd use luster dust mixed with with vodka or a clear extract. Paint it on fondant and it's a shiny silver.
2cents
I use luster dust with Everclear (vodka), just a few drops. You can paint with this. I recently did a JAWS cake and used silver luster dust and the vodka and it turned out perfect. Shiny and metallic.
jujsky
Thanks ladies!!!!! I'll try the luster dust & vodka. I used vodka & pearl dust on chocolate sea shells once for a Little Mermaid cake, but I wasn't sure if it would work on fondant too. Thanks again :D
