chickenpatty
onto your own mp3 player for you to listen to while you run? Where can I find out for sure? Thanks!
Word Nerd
Yes. It would only be a problem if you copied your CDs onto someone else's player and it wasn't for your personal use.
fivetails
Can't imagine why it wouldn't be ~ that's pretty much the only handheld music thing now, nobody makes portable cd walkmans anymore. :tongue_smilie:
Dayle in Guatemala
This is the big disagrement in our house right now. All 3 dc got an mp3 player from my parents for Christmas. Dh says that they can't all put an entire cd on each of their players they can't have the same songs on their players. Is this true? I can't seem to figure it out! Rhonda in TX
Yes, it is absolutely legal, and we are big on following copyright laws.
TravelingChris
Yes, we do this. It is completely legal to copy your own music for use on your own CD. We also do this as a family in the same household. Just as we wouldn't buy three record albums for one household, we don't buy three cds or three rights to the MP3 player. On the other hand, we are already planning on buying cds that our children own and will take with them when they leave the house and we do want to hear. We also will be gifting them their own copies of some of our own cds that they love. We make very sure we follow copyright laws.

However, loaning or borrowing CDs w/friends to load onto mp3's is NOT fair use.

No, you're free to copy the music and use it how you wish as long as it's for personal use. He may be thinking of software where you purchase licenses that allow you to install software on just one or two computers and any more and you're infringing on copyright but that's not the case with music. It's a matter of personal use, something rather vague but generally your safe if it's in your home and you're not making copies to give or sell to others outside your home.
