BikeBookBread
September 18, 2009 I've been reading up a bit on sour cream, and the consensus among foodies seems to be if it is 100% cultured cream, and there is no visible mold, use it even if it is separated. Blessedfamily
It may be ok, but I wouldn't do it. Not that far out.
Classical Country Mama
Haha! Funny timing. I just threw out a sour cream tonight that was dated Nov 5. Wouldn't have, but it just tasted a little non-sour-creamy to me. I definitely wouldn't eat one from September, but that's based on personal taste (haha) and nothing objective. Just be sure to eat safely!
BikeBookBread
Okay, two out of two is enough of a consensus, and I need to finish my quiche. Plan B.
Guest janainaz
I won't use anything past the exp. date. I was cleaning out my refrigerator and found a container that was a month expired and it seemed perfect when I opened it, but I just won't take the risk. 1GirlTwinBoys
A couple $$ is not worth getting sick, so I definitely wouldn't eat it.:tongue_smilie:
EKS
Has it been opened? If so, then definitely not. If not, then if when you open it it doesn't have mold, then it's probably fine. I think that a lot of expiration dates are there to make people buy more. However, I personally would throw it away.
s.z.ichigo
You can definitely use sour cream way past it's date, as long as it hasn't been opened. It just might taste a little stronger than normal sour cream. I always buy a few containers when it goes on sale and, invariably, there is always one that gets opened past the date. My husband always had to convince me that it's not going to kill anyone and he's always right.
Tam101
I wouldn't use it, but that isn't based on anything factually.
BikeBookBread
It had been opened, so I tasted it, and while it tasted edible, it was quite sour and strong. I decided against using it. Wasn't worth the worry...I'd be pointing every little stomach twinge back to that sour cream carton for the next week if I'd used it. Thanks! Heidi
I use sour cream all the time past the due date. Mix it up really good and it's like new : ) I have a yummy cornbread recipe that calls for a lot of sour cream. Since I make the cornbread fairly often I stock up on sour cream. I always put the oldest cream in my cornbread (because it's being cooked) and use the newest cream for things like tacos and baked potatoes. E_Edgerton
No, I am sort of a foodie, but I am weird about dairy! Just toss it, even if it was organic it is still only $2 vs being slumped over the toilet!
