Chris in VA
Definitely like the Mary Pope Osborne retellings (in 6 hardback, beautiful little books!) of The Odyssey.
Teachaheart
I'm not sure if you are looking for read alouds or books for your child to read independently. These would be read alouds. Black Ships Before Troy: The Story of the Iliad by Rosemary Sutcliff The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliff In Search of a Homeland: The Story of the Aeneid by Penelope Lively These two might be too difficult depending on your child, but they are two of my favorites. The Golden Fleece by Padraic Colum The Children's Homer by Padraic Colum
Narrow Gate Academy
the Iliad/Trojan War - The Trojan Horse by Hutton the Odyssey - Greek Myths for Young Children by Amery (section on Odysseus) Mesopotamia - Gilgamesh the Hero by Zeman and maybe Life in Ancient Mesopotamia by Mehta-Jones HTH
amtmcm
It's not exactly what you're looking for, but I always like to mention "Hubert Invents the Wheel" which takes place in Ancient Sumeria. It's hard to find historical fiction for ancient history and Hubert is a good one.
Jen in PA
Definitely like the Mary Pope Osborne retellings (in 6 hardback, beautiful little books!) of The Odyssey. These were such a huge hit for us last year!
meet me in paris
Definitely like the Mary Pope Osborne retellings (in 6 hardback, beautiful little books!) of The Odyssey. :iagree: Her Greek Myths are also very, very good. I think the Colum books are good, but beyond most first graders, even as read alouds. I'd save those for the next cycle-through.

Soph the vet
The Golden Goblet God King Hittite Warrior The Bronze Bow Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt These would all be considered read-alouds for a first grader.
