ElizabethB
Don't keep them to yourselves, share your favorites, please, I'd love to see what other people have found that they like. I just posted on that Don Potter found: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119145 I also like Swan's Spelling Book: http://books.google.com/books?id=6QISAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=spelling%20book&lr=#v=onepage&q=&f=false and, just good reading, not a textbook, the biography of William Wilberforce, it's deep reading, I read it online but only 20 pages or so a night, I usually don't like to read whole books online but will if they are something only available online, and limiting the number of pages at a time makes it easier to read online: http://books.google.com/books?id=ZCIMAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=biography+william+wilberforce&lr=#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Sebastian (a lady)
I don't have links at the moment, but Handbook of Nature Study and the Famous Men series that Memoria Press and Greenleaf Press have republished are both available. JudyJudyJudy
For history: Young Folks' Book of American Explorers: This book includes the original narratives of many explorers. The grammar was left in its original form, but the spelling was changed . Of course, many of the stories and letters were not originally written in English; therefore, they had to be translated from the original language to English. For music: The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers Handbook of Musical Biography A Score of Famous Composers For spelling: The Test and Study Speller (Second through fourth grades) The Test and Study Speller: Second Book (Begins with fifth grade) For those of you who are Christian (I'm not, but I came across these when looking for materials to use to teach my son about the Bible), these may be interesting: Wild Animals of the Bible Scripture Natural History: The Trees and Plants Mentioned in the Bible Scripture Natural History, Containing a Descriptive Account of the Quadrupeds, Birds, Fishes, Insects, Reptiles, Serpents, Plants, Trees, Minerals, Gems, and Precious Stones, Mentioned in the Bible

Kfamily
I really like three books for the seasons titled: All The Year Round Spring http://books.google.com/books?id=SawXAAAAIAAJ&dq=all%20the%20year%20round%20spring&pg=PR1#v=onepage&q=&f=false All The Year Round Winter http://books.google.com/books?id=U7MXAAAAIAAJ&dq=all%20the%20year%20round%20winter&pg=PR1#v=onepage&q=&f=false All The Year Round Autumn http://books.google.com/books?id=z5YAAAAAYAAJ&dq=all%20the%20year%20round%20autumn&pg=PR1#v=onepage&q=&f=false These are lovely books with nature stories, poetry, etc. I will be using them this year with dd (6). We also have Nature Study Made Easy that we will be using. http://books.google.com/books?id=sJ5DAAAAIAAJ&dq=nature%20study%20made%20easy&pg=PR3#v=onepage&q=&f=false HTH:001_smile: Edited August 5, 2009 by Kfamily Whew! Sebastian (a lady)
I don't have links at the moment, but Handbook of Nature Study and the Famous Men series that Memoria Press and Greenleaf Press have republished are both available. Handbook of Nature Study From my overseas connection, I can read it and use links from the table of contents, but not save it (although I know I could from the US) Famous Men of Greece Famous Men of Rome Famous Men of Modern Times (being the 1800s) Famous Men of the Middle Ages We used the Famous Men of the Middle Ages book a few years ago and I really liked it. I will say, however, that it is worth my time and money to order these from folks like Memoria Press, because they come printed, bound and with illustrations. My printer goes through ink so fast that I'd easily spend more than the cover price if I tried to print the whole book out. If I could save these to a reader, maybe it'd be worth it to do a lot of downloads.
KJB
Don't know if you already know this, but the Famous Men series can be downloaded as audio books for free from librivox. http://librivox.org/newcatalog/search.php?title=Famous+Men+of&author=&status=all&action=Search
StephinAL
Here is a handwriting book I liked: http://books.google.com/books?id=zQACAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=handwriting&lr=&as_brr=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
stripe
Harriette Treadwell's reader Butterflies and Bees and anything else by Margaret Morley (a few of her books are available in print; since most are 100 pages or so, the $20 price tag for some of them strike me as rather expensive, while others run about $8) Story Book of Science and Secret of Everyday Things by Fabre; I think I'll use the online one for everyday things rather than the print one because some are fascinating, while others (e.g. RICE) are disappointingly racist / weird. Course in Nature Study for Grades One and Two (Detroit Public Schools) Edith Patch's nature stories (there are several books), except for the minstrel bug business in A Little Gateway to Science.
