Mom2boys
Will deer and rabbits eat rhubarb plants? I'd rather not put up a fence if I don't need to. But, I also don't want to feed all my rhubarb to the critters. Does anyone know if my plants will be safe without a fence?
4kiddies
Well I have it in my backyard and haven't had a problem...at least not that I've noticed. LOL! If they are eating it they are not eating much!
djkapp
I've definitely not had any problems with deer or rabbits in my rhubarb. I wouldn't worry about a fence! Yvonne
HeatherLynn
They have left mine alone. They ate all my jalapenos, cantaloupe, okra, and cucumbers though.
OrganicAnn
I agree with everyone else, that they won't bother it. If it is an incredibly dry or bad season some animals will try to eat plants that they won't normally.
Debbie in IL
No problems with anything eating ours, either - we have a lot of deer out here, and rabbits as well, and have never had a problem with them.
Beth S
. . . so maybe the animals know that & pass it by! I quickly googled it & got this article: http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/poison/rhubarb-leaves-poisoning/overview.html It seems like we've waited FOREVER for rhubarb to grow. 18 months (or so) from planting to first harvest! But I LOVE rhubarb!
OnTheBrink
There's a bunch of it growing wild in my back yard and we have bunnies and raccoons. Neither have bothered it.
Matryoshka
Nothing has ever touched my rhubarb, and we have tons of bunnies and deer. I agree it's probably the poisonous leaves. Hmmm... I should go harvest some!
Mom2boys
Thanks so much ladies! I had tried to find the answer on the Internet, and had no luck, but I knew the Hive could help me. :D I am relived to know I don't have to put up a fence this weekend. I can't wait to harvest some rhubarb! I wish I didn't have to wait until next year. Now, does anyone have a good recipe for rhubarb bread? :bigear:
