  1. To clarify, I wasn't saying he should have followed the woman...the article mentioned something about him recording her. Not sure if that was a store camera or his phone or something. I don't understand why he wouldn't have just let her go and contacted the police at that point. What I was trying to say is that legally, I'm not sure how the stand your ground laws work because she pepper-sprayed him and at that point he could have potentially feared for his life (maybe thinking she was pulling a gun out) and then shot. Again, I agree that he should never have been there in the first place. Sorry if my post was confusing.
  2. Well, congrats on that accomplishment and good luck on the new stack!
  3. I'm not sure where he kept his gun, but I live in Texas and lots of people carry handguns in their cars or even in their purses...it's not unusual. As @AnotherNewName mentioned, she pepper-sprayed him, so I could see him reacting to that. What if he thought she was pulling out a gun from her purse? The discussion of "stand your ground" came up in the other thread, and this would be an occasion where the possibility of fearing for your life could come up. The sketchy part to me is that he followed her out of the store. I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know how that works. Maybe it doesn't matter.
  4. So my understanding, in general about stand your ground laws is this from what you posted above..."with each one defining how and where a person can defend themselves when they feel their life is in danger." In the two recent incidents...the boy who rang the doorbell and got shot, and the kids who pulled up in the driveway and got shot...I don't see how either of the two shooters can claim they felt their lives were in danger. I believe these are both still active investigations, so there's a chance more information may come out, but based on the information released so far, nothing that I've seen would indicate that. However, the two shooters may be falsely educated on what these laws cover. Did they know the bolded part...that they had to fear for their life prior to shooting? All gun owners NEED to be educated on this. People should have the right to protect themselves when they feel their life is in danger.
  5. It was a handgun, not a rifle…the story linked above just said “semi-automatic.” This story has the information that it was a pistol… https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/pocharaponneammanee/pregnant-woman-shot-walgreens-nashville
  6. I wonder if some people have a huge misunderstanding of the “stand your ground” laws in their states (not sure if these states have them). Like do they think that if someone merely steps foot on their property, they’re allowed to shoot them? Gun owners definitely need to be educated on these laws.
  7. FYI…it hasn’t been updated today and was published yesterday so maybe that’s why it was harder to find 🤷‍♀️ https://www.foxnews.com/us/maine-police-identify-gunman-allegedly-shot-killed-four-people-wounded-three-others
  8. Is this the correct incident? https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/news/crime/maine-shooting-bowdoin-suspect-guns-joseph-eaton-yarmouth-maine-shooting/97-5ba19156-2cc8-45b5-8805-15dddbf97575 In this article it mentions the shooter had previously been convicted of a felony, therefore should not have been legally able to own firearms. Hopefully the police can figure out how he obtained them....not that it brings back those who have passed, but perhaps it will identify another problem or person who helped him.
  9. I'm currently struggling with a book...My Grandmother Asks Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman. This is the second time I've started this book. I'm super sensitive to animal death and I just know that's where this book is going. When I started it a few months back I was dealing with some anxiety stuff and I knew I definitely couldn't handle it at that time, so I set it aside. I picked it up earlier this week because I'm doing better now, but just thinking about it is still bothering me a lot. I've read about 120 pages, and so far I'm liking it. The two Backman books I've read, I've loved. His writing is so good, so that's not the problem, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to finish this one. Does anyone else struggle with this...I feel so conflicted! 🙃
  10. I'm thinking about using Bookshark next year for history, but I'll probably customize it a bit to fit our schedule and maybe change out some books here and there. For those who have used Bookshark (or even Sonlight, I guess, since they're similar)...am I okay to just get the Teacher's guide? Is the student guide necessary? Are there any other materials that are must-haves?
  11. That’s very cool! I love looking in used books for inscriptions and things, but I’ve never found anything that interesting. I was just thinking that it would make a really cool bookmark. ☺️
  12. My dad showed up to our Christmas celebrations this past Christmas with what he was sure was a sinus infection (he’s had many in his lifetime). The next day he wasn’t better, went to urgent care, and was positive for Covid. He never had fever. Of all of us exposed, only I got sick, again I never had fever. It just felt like a bad cold. Testing at home was wonky. I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. Feel better soon!
  13. How funny! I hope your "love story" book turns out better than mine!! ☺️
  14. I finished Immortality: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz. This is the sequel to Anatomy: A Love Story, which I really enjoyed a few months back. I was looking forward to this one, but unfortunately I didn’t love it. The first 3/4 of the book felt super disconnected from what happened in the first book. The last quarter was better. 🫤 Kind of frustrating. Oh well…on to the next! (3.25 stars)
  15. Just wanted to come back and say…of the shows I’ve watched so far, Flower Crew has had the best ending! I’m still a newbie, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but we were happy with it. 👍
  16. I thought Attorney Woo’s relationship with her other attorney friend (the female attorney who was always opening her water bottles) was also really sweet.
  17. I have no experience with autism, so unfortunately I can’t speak to whether or not she’s portrayed as a unicorn savant. I’m sorry! As @Murphy101 mentioned, the main character is obsessed with the law and whales…she talks about whales a lot. She also has a photographic memory. Other things I can mention…she didn’t like to be touched, she was very particular about her food, she was very organized, she had to do this counting thing prior to coming into a new room. Those are just some things I can think of as far as how they portrayed her. Each episode focuses on a new case her law firm is working on. The romance is on the lighter side. One of the episodes had another autistic client that was very different than Attorney Woo and there was emphasis on autism being a spectrum. I think watching the first few episodes, you’ll get a good idea of how the main character is portrayed, but the other people evolve over the show as they learn more about her. I don’t know if any of that helps, but let me know if you have any other questions. ☺️
  18. DD12 and I are about to finish up Flower Crew (it is on Netflix). I wasn't sure about it after the first episode and I wasn't loving the lead actress at first, but after the second episode we were hooked! We've really liked it. Of course I'm saying this prior to watching the final episode, but that's okay. Ha! 😂
  19. We read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires for book club a couple of years back. This was another one of those occasions where I was the outlier of the group. 😂 Everyone else thought the book was gross and stupid, but I thought it was great! I love the cover of the book too. Currently, it's the only book I've read by Hendrix, but I'd also like to read more. I haven't heard the best reviews on his latest book (How to Sell a Haunted House)..I'm wondering if his books have a love/hate relationship with people. I've had his older book My Best Friend's Exorcism on my radar for a bit, so I'll probably get to that one first.
  20. Thanks...my DD is just about to finish up her 9th grade year, so I'm starting to contemplate transcript formats and this was one thing I wasn't quite sure about. I was originally thinking about including the number grade, mostly because her grades at home and through outside providers are all pretty high and I thought it was worth showing that, but the simplicity and cleanliness of it all does make sense too.
  21. Yesterday I finished The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. This is the first book I've read by this author. It was an interesting story about the women codebreakers in England during WWII. The book follows a trio of women and their journeys throughout the war. The book felt a little bit long at times and funny enough the part I liked the least was the bit about the Rose Code. 😝 Overall, though, I enjoyed learning about these women and another facet of WWII I knew nothing about. (4 stars)
