  1. What are your recommendations for books to read in 8th grade? (Literature) Particularly for a girl. I would like a good portion of them to be good to read aloud together with her and discuss. Thanks!
  2. WTMA - Saxon prealgebra. Courtney Ostaff. Last year daughter almost cried just hearing the word math. Just tonight she said she thinks she might even “like” math. She’s taking prealgebra with Mrs. Ostaff and is truly enjoying it and learning so much!
  3. My kids have had or are having great experiences with: Center for Lit Wilson Hill Latin WTMA prealgebra Schole Academy Informal Logic
  4. What grade is she now? Wondering when the best time to consider the Bright Ideas class would be.
  5. Has anyone used Rod and Staff spelling 8? If so, did you like it?
  6. What has your experience been like with Brave Writer classes? We don’t use any of their products at home but the classes look great and there are so many options!
  7. Thanks for all of this info. We definitely will need a class with plenty of feedback so maybe Coram Deo isn’t the one. Maybe Circe Academy gives more if we go for LTOW.
  8. How about Lost Tools of Writing - either from Coram Deo Tutorials or Circe Academy? Anyone have experience there??
  9. This sounds like a good class. I’ll see where she is at the end of this year and if this is a good fit. Do you have to take previous writing classes at WHA as a prerequisite? It says it builds on their LA4 fundamentals of expository writing.
  10. What are your favorite online schools that provide writing courses (for high school) that are NOT connected to a literature class? Some of the schools we have looked into have English all lumped together but we are looking for writing only. Thanks!
  11. Hi ladies, I'm trying to decide on a read aloud to my kiddos (8th, 5th; 2nd). I'm choosing from Uncle Tom's Cabin Told to the Children by H.E. Marshall or Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Beecher Preachers by Jean Fritz. Have any of you read either of these and have a preference? Thanks!
  12. Hi ladies I know different volumes of MOH and SOTW can have a different “flavor”, so to speak. Which of these books do you like most for volume 4? Thanks!
  13. I have a question about Biblioplan. On the second page of each weekly grid, there are suggestions for writing assignments. I am particularly looking at the logic stage. How do you know what books the assignments are pulled from? Do they always correlate with the Companion book or Remember the Days (vs one of the other spines like SOTW or MOH)? Thanks!
  14. Thanks! Do you mind me asking why the new version wasn’t an option for you? I know they are quite different but just curious.
  15. Hi ladies, I am considering using writing strands or winning with writing for my fifth grade daughter this year. Can anyone who is familiar with both of them tell me what they think the strengths of one is over the other? Thanks!
  16. Oops - this should have gone on the K-8 curriculum board.
  17. Hi ladies I would love to hear your thoughts on Minimus Latin. What do you like about it? Can you teach multiple grade levels? I’m mostly thinking with my 3rd and 5th grader. How would you compare it to Latin for Children? Thanks!

  19. We used rod and staff 6 and a little of 7 before moving on to Saxon prealgebra.
  20. Can’t help with reviews but I’m eager to hear what people say because my 8th grade daughter is signed up for it! The syllabus looks great to me and I certainly love the people at CAP and Schole from what I know so far!
  21. TTC DVD set is regularly $99. As a Pelican, it's $89. Their website has a page that lists all the perks of membership. Discounts, office hours where you log on and listen in on a discussion about various topics, radio read along audio books, teacher guides, discounts to their online academy classes, discounts on classes for parents, etc..... I've been a member for a few years and it's been worth it - particularly if you have kiddos that might take a class. If you just want to buy TTC, perhaps not. I'm sorry - I'm not sure what the discount is at the convention, but I'm sure if you emailed them, they'd be happy to let you know.
  22. Hi ladies, I am teaching a class or two this year at our local co-op. I am thinking of having one of them be a class where we read books and teach them to discuss them along the lines of Center for Lit/Teaching the Classics. I would start with picture books and walk them through the story chart, discuss elements of a story, lots of Socratic style questions, etc...... I will have 8 weeks. Do you have any ideas of material I could use or books that aren't too long to work through? I am thinking about All The Places to Love and perhaps A Bargain for Frances to start. CFL uses those and I'm familiar with how they walk through those books. That would likely be week 1, along with introducing some basics about stories. I'm starting from scratch, so any help would be great. I would want to have plenty of discussion and hands on activities if possible. Send any ideas my way. I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks! ETA: This will be for 5th grade
