  1. I had dd try the color method on today's assignment. She got all the integer problems correct! Thanks so much!
  2. See if you can find it used somewhere. My dd is taking it at a cottage school, and we got a used copy there for $20.
  3. DD12 is having a bear of a time with details on her prealgebra homework. It's really hurting her grade, because I don't give her half-credit for writing 3 instead of -3 as the answer. Other times, she'll forget to write the signs in a middle step of the problem. So she'll go through the steps properly, but with a wrong +/- sign on one digit, it will throw off the answer completely. Does anyone have any tried-and-true methods for helping their students remember details in their math work? I'm naturally detail-oriented, so I'm not good at teaching this particular... detail.
  4. How many problems per day does he do? I like the idea, but I'm worried I would suffer open revolt.
  5. So far my 12yo is enjoying Art of Argument. She likes the Socrates dialogues.
  6. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is the book we used in my newswriting class in college. It was excellent. The cover was different (earlier edition), but I'm optimistic this is the same one.
  7. There's a really big kid's consignment sale out here too, twice a year. Would you say it's more work to tag and label all your stuff for someone else to organize, or for you to man your own table for a few hours? (With or without volunteering as staff.)
  8. That's how the one I go to operates as well -- only they put labels with the sellers' initials. I had no idea the method was so widespread. The checkout method is a big production.
  9. That's a great point. How do they account for everyone's sales? Do the sellers turn over their stuff on a consignment basis and then the shoppers pay once at the exit? There's a sale near me that does that. I wonder how that would work in a swap meet setup, where the individual sellers have their own tables. Do the organizers go around before the end of the sale to collect fees?
  10. Now this poll is on the seller's side of the equation. ETA: If it helps the imagination, this would be for a rather large sale that drew sellers from a large geographical area -- bigger than a typical homeschool group sale. Possibly as many as 100 sellers.
  11. I'm testing the waters for hosting a homeschool swap meet next spring. I'm doing a little market research here. So jump in and have some fun! 14. LOL, wouldn't that be funny to see "Critters You Have Dissected" as a box to fill in on a college app?
  15. OK, quick question. Do you give him 10 pts. for having turned it in complete, even if, say, he got totally confused and bombed it? So you're not penalizing him for those assignments where he did his best, but just didn't get it right? Or do you grade it normally, then assign points based on number correct? I've been starting to keep my grades at Engrade.com, and the points for homework idea is intriguing.
  16. Khan Academy, Audible.com are two of our favorites here.
  17. I think the CC-then-BA-later makes a lot of sense. You can start working sooner and save up for your next degree, and the debt is lower. I'm hugely concerned about the higher ed bubble, and I'm not at all convinced that the "college experience" ("O-ver-ra-ted!" Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap) is worth racking up tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Debt limits your options in many ways, and for a lot longer than you think. The economy we're in now may last several more years. There are a lot of college students graduating to a tough labor market, where they are having to compete hard for jobs that don't pay much, and don't really require the knowledge they gained in their major. Are there interesting extracurriculars you can do at the CC?
  18. My brother is getting his BSN online through Indiana State University. He's going from LVN to BSN, but they have an RN-BSN track as well.
  19. Purple. PURPLE. No one uses red pens anymore; it's the equivalent of screaming at your students, doncha know. :tongue_smilie:
  20. I'd love to know, too. I just got mine, and I'm thinking one lesson a week and finishing early. But I need to look at it in more detail.
  21. Not BTDT, but maybe you could give him a stash of Bed Bath and Beyond 20% off coupons for little things he might want to add to his room once he's settled in.
