  1. 🤭 I feel like I am cheating on my piano teacher! My dd has been playing piano with her for nearly 3 years. She is a kind woman who lives in our neighborhood. By no means a professional pianist, but a competent player. Dd was always a timid child and this teacher was kind and not strict and a great teacher for her in the beginning. Piano teacher got Covid in December and was hospitalized. She came home on oxygen and hasn’t been able to do lessons since. But she did always communicate that she was hoping to get back to lessons this spring. In the meantime I hired a great college aged man from our church who comes to our house and teaches dd. He is great and is a level up from original teacher. When I hired him I told him our existing teacher was out sick for a few months and we were just looking for someone in the mean time. The problem is that now we like him better and original teacher has said she is ready to start lessons again. I know the adult thing to do is to just tell the original teacher the truth, but I can’t bring myself to it. She has become my friend. She has a dd the same age as another one of my kids and we see eachother outside of piano lessons. Currently I am paying for lessons from both of them because I’m avoiding conflict 😭 help!
  2. Umm… I have no idea where that unicorn came from???
  3. Thanks guys. It has actually been therapeutic to see that many people have felt this way.♥️
  4. My oldest is in 8th grade and I think we’ll be sending her to a classical school next year. It’s only 3 days/week, and I’m still homeschooling my other 3 kids but I am having such a hard time accepting it! I know it’s the best thing for her. It’s a great fit, and largely we are doing it so she can play basketball for them (which is really important for her). But I am so going to miss her 😭 Also, I feel like it’s changing a part of me. I AM a homeschooling mom. It is who I am. I’m sure I have some sort of unhealthy codependency/identity thing going on, but I don’t really care, I’m happy 🤪 If I’m this worked up about 3 day/week school, I dont know how I’ll ever accept college.
  5. I’ve checked the master sticky and see lit classes and history classes, but that’s not exactly what I’m looking for. What online providers have live classes in the great books? With or without composition. Christian or secular. I am aware of Schole, Wilson Hill, CLRC, and Wasko Lit. Any others I’m missing? Thanks!
  6. The class is purely Ancient Greek Lit with no composition. We would do composition separately, as well as history separately. Why exactly would you not want those nonfiction books? I'm trying to think this through. My main objective is for her to think deeply and discuss ideas, so I think I'm ok with the nonfiction texts. Thanks for the input.
  7. Planning for 9th next year, dd is an ambitious student. Good reader, enjoys Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Thornton Wilder; but has never read ancient texts. I am considering Schole Academy's Ancient Lit, which I would couple with SWB History of the Ancient World, but Schole's reading list is quite shorter than Wilson Hill or CLRC. I often feel like dd is not challenged enough, but I also think CLRC looks a bit overwhelming. Here is Schole's reading list: Illiad, Homer, trans. Robert Fagles Prometheus Bound, Seven Famous Greek Plays Oedipus Rex, Sophocles, Seven Famous Greek Plays Antigone, Sophocles, Seven Famous Greek Plays Republic, Plato, trans. Alan Bloom The Apostolic Fathers in English, trans. Michael W. Holmes The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Ancient Christian Monks On the Cosmic Mystery of Jesus Christ, Maximos the Confessor It's about 1 book/month. Is that enough?
  8. I’m trying to think through how to teach a journalism/newspaper co-op class. The kids would be 8th and 9th grade. My thougts were to break out different newspaper sections: co-op news, local news, world news, sports, etc. Give 1 section to each student. Take 3 weeks per paper (class meets 1x/week). Week 1 hand out assignments and brainstorm ideas. Write at home. Week 2 peer edit with a partner? Class is 45 minutes so this wouldn’t take that long? Homework- everyone put their portion in a shared google doc. Week 3, I bring in printed copies for everyone to review then we print and hand out end of day. Any thoughts about this format? Anything to add? Perhaps a week or 2 teaching how to write a news article? Any resources for this?
  9. Thanks, I ordered a bunch of these! Now I have reading for several months!
  10. I'm going to the beach in a week and I'm wanting to bring a love story. Any recommendations?
  11. Does anyone know of online programs that you can join for the 2nd semester? I’m not loving dd’s in person Spanish class and I’m looking to join a different one for January. 8th grade, Spanish 1.
  12. As I said, the fever developed friday but the blisters just started this morning. He is absolutely miserable. How long should I expect the blisters to last?
  13. Ok, definitely hand foot and mouth. This is my 3rd dc and we've never dealt with this. Before, so I didn't know what I was looking at!
  14. Ds is 8 yo. Friday developed 102 fever. Saturday vomited and stomach ache. Sunday fever over but sore throat. He couldn’t sleep last night because his toes were so itchy. Now he has this rash on his toes and his hands and he is miserable. When I google covid toes it looks more like a solid red, this is more like a rash with distinct spots/blisters. Thoughts? We did a COVID test yesterday, just waiting for results…
  15. For those who have said vitamix- do you ever get a burning smell from it? I have 1 that is not quite 2 years and when it's put to hard use gives off a burning smell. Is this normal and it will still last 15 years, or is there something wrong?
  16. Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University.
  17. Does anyone have a suggestion for where to get fun wheeled carry on suitcases? I found some at pottery barn teens, but looking for more options. My kids would love tropical print.
  18. We are taking a family vacation in early January, so for Christmas I want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and give the kids gifts that they will need for vacation. Kids are 13, 11, 8, and 5. Vacation is to Mexico beach. 7hour flight. Any suggestions?
  19. Just chiming in to add to your research- I really don’t know what “social emotional” means and can’t imagine what type of books these are.
  20. I clicked on this thread expecting to see a picture of a holiday quilt. I'm sorry about your mom, but now I want to see holiday quilts!
  21. The basement is not a punishment. Fully finished walkout basement where we homeschool. My house has 6 exterior doors. I have 4 kids plus many neighbor kids that come and go daily. You guys are kind of expecting the impossible. Don't rehome the dog, don't keep him in the basement, never ever allow him to get out again. I cannot guarantee that without strong measures. He is trained and doesn't usually dart out the door. He is never let to roam outside unleashed. He must have seen something like a squirrel. I absolutely get that he was scared. I secured my dog and went to apologize. I took responsibility for the fact that my dog was in his yard and said I was very sorry. He continued to scream at me and use obscenities, that was when I asked him to stop because he was scaring us.
