  1. I did 1 mile this morning and core exercises. It's DD#2's birthday and I had to get to the store to pick up balloons and then I had to make waffles as requested for breakfast, so I didn't have time for a longer walk, but I may be able to do one later in the day. 😊
  2. Happy Tuesday to all! These threads are for those who'd like encouragement and accountability in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  3. Mine is 5'3". She'll be 12 next month and has always been tall for her age.
  4. I'm sorry for your loss - I'm sure it's very difficult to go for walks right now. I'm proud of you for committing to walk today. ❤️
  5. Did 3 miles and arm work. It's in the upper 40s right now and the air is nice and crisp, which I absolutely LOVE for a walk.
  6. Good morning everyone! These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  7. Walked 2.6 miles, but for some reason that really took everything out of me this morning. So I'm skipping the strength exercises for now; I'll do them later in the day if I feel up to it.
  8. It's Sunday! These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  9. Yeah, I am open to other title suggestions, lol! I don't really want to use "exercise," though, because some days whatever intentional movement we can manage may not be something we would consider exercise, and that's okay - the goal is just moving, intentionally. But if anyone has other ideas that capture what we're doing without unfortunate bowel connotations, I'm willing to consider them. 😄
  10. I walked 5.6 miles! And after recovering from that I did a tiny bit of core work so I could say I did it. 😄
  11. Goooood morning! ☀️ These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  12. Beast Academy 2B uses shapes as variables. Here are some sample problems (using letters instead because they're simpler to type): Monsters with x feet need to bring x+x+x+2 socks to ski camp. How many socks should each monster described below pack for ski camp? (child provides # of socks for monsters with 4, 5, 10, and 50 feet) The number of girls in Ms. Franz's class is double the number of boys. If there are y boys in the class, which expression below describes the total number of students in the class? Options are y+y, y-(y-y), y+(y+y), y+(y-y), and y-(y+y) Simplify the expression: a+(b-b)+(c-c) Find the value of the symbol: 5+m=m+m; 16=n-100 So yes, BA does indeed deal with variables in level 2. Math Mammoth, which I've used for 1st and 2nd grade material, has some shape variables as well. Things like 3+x=5 or 4=y-2. But I can't remember if that's in 1st or starts in 2nd. I've also used A Beka 1st grade and I don't recall anything like that in it, but it's possible I've just forgotten. I have no experience with math education outside the US. I do recall being bored with arithmetic in elementary school; it wasn't until prealgebra that I thought, oh, math might actually be interesting. I'm really glad that I have options available for my kids that allow me to bring in the more interesting stuff at lower levels.
  13. The plan is homeschooling all the way through. I am aware that plans can change, but at present, that's the plan. So, the path I was thinking would be biology next year, then a year of geology and astronomy, then chemistry, then physics. At that point they would be able to choose additional areas of study (off the beaten path) or AP or DE options. It seems like biology would be a prerequisite course for things like anatomy, marine biology, zoology, botany, etc., so it would be better to do biology before any of those. Am I wrong about that? I don't mind changing things around, but I don't want to throw them into a course and then realize that it has a whole bunch of assumed background info that they're missing. Environmental science - maybe? Meteorology? Would they need to be at higher math levels for that?
  14. Thanks! I mainly just like teaching my kids myself, so if it's something I feel capable of teaching, I don't want to outsource it. (Plus they spend enough time on screens as it is - though they would disagree with me on that. 😄) Thank you! Readability is important. Is the homeschool bundle something to order directly from the publisher if I went with this option?
  15. What I've found works for me is reading a commentary alongside Scripture. I am starting with suggested commentaries from the posts linked here (a post for each book of the Bible). I have really loved the ones I've read by Dale Ralph Davis - here's his commentary on 1 Samuel, as an example.
  16. I walked 4.1 miles this morning and did some core work. Had to get started early for a longer walk because I may not be able to get an afternoon walk in - it's supposed to rain.
  17. I'm glad you checked the boxes, but sorry it was a rough day for you. Hoping today will be better. *hugs*
  18. Thanks! We are local to a state flagship that offers DE, so I'm assuming that will be a good option if it's needed later. My main reason for planning on biology for next year is that it's next in the WTM cycle since they're doing physics now. But I guess I'm not firmly attached to the idea - it's just what I'd assumed we would do.
  19. Finally Friday, woohoo! These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  20. I did 1.5 miles. I also did arm work - I didn't want to, but I knew I would have to fess up to you people if I didn't, so I did it. 😄
  21. It's Thursday! I noticed that not as many people participated in yesterday's thread - hope everyone is doing okay. These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time!
  22. One in California now: https://www.cnet.com/news/new-mysterious-monolith-appears-in-california/
  23. I did 1.5 miles and a bit of arm work. There's frost on the ground this morning.
  24. Happy Wednesday! These threads are for those who'd like accountability and encouragement in doing intentional daily movement. Anyone may join in at any time! 😊
  25. Any recommendations for biology for accelerated kids who will be in 7th and 4th by age? This year (6th and 3rd) they are doing Conceptual Physics and it's working well for them; I have added some labs and have been teaching them how to write lab reports. Regarding math level, next year DD#1 will be doing AOPS Intro to Geometry; DD#2, AOPS Intro to Algebra. I am NOT interested in online courses. I will want to include labs. I'm fine if there's a program that includes labs as part of it, but I'm also fine incorporating labs from a separate source alongside our study of a main text, if that ends up working better. We do have a good microscope (though I will have to relearn how to use it!). I have looked at the sticky thread for biology in the high school forum, but I found it kind of overwhelming. (Yes, I know it's only December, but planning is on my mind right now and I'm just going with it, lol.)
