  1. If a book is a favorite, or if a child is longing for a book I am not sure I would use it for language arts lessons. Sometimes one just have to enjoy a book :)
  2. How interesting that one word can make such a connection! I know Nancy Drew only from referrings in other books to her. A kind of common knowledge I suppose.
  3. I had to look up what sleuth means... Just for my vocab: what associaton does the word have? Is it speaking language? Does it have a negative sound? Or positive ?
  4. Don’t forget to enjoy the music! I wish I could drop in and listen to you :)
  5. 125/125 books :) https://www.goodreads.com/user_challenges/6886062 But some of them were less then 100 pages (compensating my 400+ Pages) books
  6. I finished a biography about Gertrude Bell this week. I had never heard about her before someone mentioned this book. https://www.goodread...72.Desert_Queen Somehow a sad story, somehow very interesting as it also describes the development from Iraq as nation. Some current news items from the last few years felt in its place. I started a biography about the Thomas Mann family. https://www.goodread...e-einer-familie I thought it would be a book about him and the family he grew up within, and how he wrote ‘The Buddenbrooks’. This book starts 20 years after the publishing of that book and what happens to his children... still interesting though :) I also started a book about Dvorak, that Jenn mentioned. https://www.goodread...7.Dvo_k_in_Love The first part was a little overwhelming in terms of music terms I am not familiar with, but the other parts are easier to me. Each part is written from the pov of an other person in Dvoraks life.
  7. Where I live we have exit exams, and dd will have to learn several writings as possible exam options. One of them is a column / blog tekst. Although dd’s first try was not bad, I want to show her well written samples of what it could be. As she is 15 I am not looking for writings from 40+ adults, but something from 18-24yo, something she can connect with. For the moment she thinks that asking for more mature writing = boring writing, but her textbooks says that colums contain often humor. Her writings are vividly , originally but youthful. I realise time will solve lot, but still think that good examples might give an idea what is possible. Samples / links might be written in dutch / english / french / german
  8. :grouphug: I hope you will get your sleep next night
  9. Thank you both!!! She asked me a few pages before a similar question, and today again, and I just wastn’t sure it was allowed :) For now she understands this, but I will definetly post any further questions, thanks in advance!
  10. Question of dd: If definition 1 says: Speed = distance travelled / time taken Definition 2 says: Speed = frequency x wavelength Is one allowed to say: Distance travelled / time taken = frequency x wavelength. ?????
  11. 240 is just a little too much for me,And spreading about several years would not work for me. As homeschooling happens at home I just read mostly at home...
  12. I did not read the mein kampf it self. But I read a book about it and heavily quoting it. That book I bought and own myself as paperbook. And even that I did not read it in public ( I seldom travel)
  13. I finished 2 books this week: Digisick. About the relationship between digital stuff and you brain, and if there is such a thing as digi addiction. I am not medical or biological educated so I learned a lot about brains and could recognize certain effects by myself. The book was a little bit theoritical, so I missed something about ‘how to solve your problems’ I also finished the book I started in the banned books week: The forbidden book about Mein Kampf I want definetly to reread this book, as one has to keep her / his mind focused while reading it, which is not always my strength. It explains a lot about how Hitlers rethoric could work, and how much insight Hitler had in how people function, and used this to manipulate them. I started a biography about Gertrude Bell.
  14. It doesn’t matter how one has been schooled, diploma’s that is what count. In USA case AP’s and test scores. Homeschoolers also pass exit exams and get a diploma.
  15. I am afraid I am not that organized :) I can handle not buying certain colours, I can definetly not handle putting clothes in order... I just wash, (iron) and fold the clothes, she has to to put the clothes in and organize her closet her self...
  16. Adding After reading aspergirls we reorganized dd’s clothes. One can have comfortable clothes and still looking nice. Her clothes are that way now she can’t mismatch any longer, she just ‘grab’ something ;) We buy online behind the computer, and send back what doesn’t fit. She loves it this way. We also learned that dd had troubles with deodorant (irritating, wrong or too strong smell) so we decided to make her own deodorant.
  17. Dd likes the Aspergirl books by Rudy Simone It helped to communicate how and what she experiences and what not. Things are better now then at 13. About changing clothes: the only way that worked for dd is to pick change her clothes every single day, every thing. That fits into her logic. Dd has also almost no friends. I did not know she has a fantasy world that is almost real to her, so her need for IRL friends is lower then mine. I had to learn to accept that. She realised - thankfully - I can be her bridge, her interpretor for ‘the outside world’ so she accept more guidance now. Clothing and hair are going better and better
  18. If I understand the concept of CC well, most of them won't give acces to 'University' in the Netherlands. Neither do IGCSE's, only AP's and A-levels gives acces to 'University' The General Education requirements are covered in Highschool, not at the University. Transcripts are useless without extern validation. 'Middle of the Road' students, don't go to Universities, they might go to 'hogeschool' (FachHochschule)
  19. Theo Thijssen: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_Thijssen Is an Dutch author that everybody knows from 'kees, the boy' but never actually has read. About two hears ago I tried Kees de Jongen, and found it a terrible boek. The author switch between fantasy and the real world all time without notice so I had to reread parts when we were suddenly in the other world. So I decided never to read Thijssen again. Untill Tress started to read Thijssen this year, and felt in love with other titels of him: Schoolland and Happy Class. So I borrowed Happy Class from her and read the book this week. I really, really liked it. Although the author is from for the fifties, the stories about the class are written such way I imagined It happened in my own elementary school. Dealing with school inspectors as well due to homeschooling, I had to smile when there becomes a new way of keeping some records and it effects the whole school although some teachers jus ignore the new rules. I just liked the book :)
  20. We drink tap water, tea or coffee neither of them fridged. We have 1 l bricks, so one for milk and one for juice. Dh has one beer can (25-33 cl) in fridge and put another one in it when he takes the fridged one. Red wine, porto is at room temperature We shop/fetch groceries twice a week just what we need the next 3-4 days. In the past we bought once a week for 7 days, but we didn't like the vegetables at day 6 and 7 We were surprised when we learned that some Americans get their groceries once a month! Only in summer the fridge get really full when we put fruit in it against fruit flies and to cool our selves down
  21. I don't drink wine as it causes nightmares to me. I do drink coffee as it helps me to concentrate. When I get decaf without knowing it, I like it, sleep tereffic and need a double dosis coffee next day just to live. I can function with less coffee during summer / vacation season.
  22. I need coffee to function, but tea is more ' I sit and relax and take time for my self' I can't drink tea in a hurry....
  23. The book has been translated into Dutch and is available through IBL! I have performanced Dvorak once, but would love to sing another piece of choir music of / from / by him.Just discovered his Te Deum.
