  1. For those more knowledgeable about WG (Winston Grammar) and MCT (Michael Clay Thompson), I would like to know how the two programs may be comparable and different in regards to grammar. I've read many threads, and looked at as many samples online as possible, and I'm waffling betwixt the two. What I like about both is the parsing of sentences as opposed to diagramming. I super like the four ways of looking at a sentence by MCT, and wonder if maybe I could just get one book from MCT which explains it in depth, and then use that way of analysis along with WG? If so, which book from MCT would be most beneficial to get? The other aspect of MCT which I like is that it is a complete language arts curriculum, unfortunately WG is not. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
  2. Does anyone know of, or has anyone developed their own curriculum that follows the Genevieve Foster history books?
  3. We're currently using Shurley English 2. My two dd's hate it, BUT it gets the job done! Maybe I'll switch next year to MCT, not sure (but it appears that a lot of replies here are in favor of it). Shurley does not diagram sentences, it parses them. Also, with Shurley English you do get some composition in, so you do not need to add that. We also use Spell to Write and Read (SWR), which is very similar to Writing Road to Reading and Logic of English. SWR would be less expensive than LOE, as it's a one time buy, and can be used for ALL grades. It is Not open and go, and is very teacher intensive, but well worth the effort. SWR encourages students learning to write Cursive First - which is a program that can be implemented separate from SWR, but goes specifically with SWR. SWR is considered an intense phonics instruction program. It does incorporate composition and grammar, but does not exist for that purpose. We tried Serl's Language Lessons, but my dd's were not into it at all, they like the strict stucture of Shurley English better (even though they fight it). Serl's is more of a Charlotte Mason approach as well as the Queen Homeschooling Language Lessons. I have a sister who swears by CLE Language Arts as it is COMPREHENSIVE - you need nothing else to supplement - that alone may be a big plus. I looked at it, but didn't really like how it was set up. (I do like their math though.) HTH
  4. Is BA mostly for supplementation, or can it be used as a full math program in wanted?
  5. Does anyone use Khan Academy exclusively for math?
  6. Would like to know if anyone has used all three levels of this, and what your reactions are now. I've read that one needs to supplement quite a bit with it, so what have you used for supplementation?
  7. Have any of you used this as your core curriculum, or do you use as a supplement, or, if you use it as a core, what supplementation would it need?
  8. I've been looking at Startwrite as it is so customizable. I think I'll like it.
  9. Can anyone address how All About Reading compares to Primary Arts of Language: Reading? I'm interested in both programs for ds who is ready to begin reading.
  10. I see that someone else mentioned using SWR. They endorse teaching writing (in cursive, but you don't have to - it can be print) at THE SAME TIME as learning the letter sounds. Yes, it is a slow process, but if you can have enough patience, then it may be the program to help you. Heads up though, it's not an open and go program. You, as the teacher, must put a lot of time into it, but there are DVD's to help you through the process.
  11. Has anyone used all four levels of Truth in Science? I'm very interested in this. It is for 3rd - 6th grades. On their website it shows that the last version was from 2010. Does anyone know if they are still in business and plan to republish again?
  12. Hoping to begin MFW ECC in the fall. Will have 4th and 3rd grader, along with K. I figure the K can listen to a lot and be involved in crafts, and that a separate program would not be necessary. I'm most concerned about the science not being that strong for 3rd and 4th graders. I'm VERY interested in Truth in Science. Has anyone used Truth in Science, and would it be possible to fit it into the ECC year? Or, if I would use TIS, what history/social studies/civics program would you recommend that would cover world history similar to ECC for elementary grades? I need something that's planned for me.
