  1. I didn't realize that they were individual pages. Thanks for responding I would not have known to look.
  2. I had no idea that MEP went beyond Year 6. The link isn't on the Years 1-6 page and an internet search didn't reveal any links. Do you know where I might find it? The only other MEP page I found was a page of puzzles and extra logic activities. Thanks.
  3. Greetings, I am a lurker from the Grammar Stage part of the forum. We have been homeschooling for a couple of years and have always had trouble with math. Started in Singapore, went to Math Mammoth, BJU, and Saxon....each for about 3 or 4 months. We have finally found a system that works for math. I use Strayer Upton Arithmetic and Mathematics Enhancement Programme and we both really love it so far and I can see sticking with it for the next 4 years. I am trying to think ahead a bit though and make sure we are prepared when Pre Algebra and Algebra hit in grades 7 or 8. For those that used MEP, where did your students go after Year 6 and what programs did you have success with? Thanks.
  4. Cha-Cha Slide or Electric Slide....standing by the classics!! :) ...also shows my age...
  5. Coldplay Ed Sheeran Movie Scores Early Jazz Club Jazz Pearl Jam My daughter listens to the Kidz Bop station. I've thought about subscribing to the pay service but the ads really don't bother me. We love Pandora!
  6. Pantone!!! That.Is.Awesome! I don't know why I didn't think about Americas Test Kitchen, we used to watch those on our local PBS station....Thanks
  7. My DD is interested in delving into the technical points of cooking which is beyond me to teach (I can barely cook an egg...lol) and none of our culinary schools offer any classes or help otherwise. Can anyone suggest a book or video series that might help with the basics? Knife skills, basic cooking education, basic instructional methods (poaching, roasting, braising...etc). She has taken kids cooking "classes" and camps but all the prep work is already done and she wants to do the actual prep work. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
  8. LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring...DD loved The Hobbit so we dove into the series, we are almost done with book one I'm debating reading her the Harry Potter series, might let her discover it on her own....until then....LOTR I do really wish she liked Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz.....loved both of those when I was a kid....
  9. We live near a university and the foreign language department offers both lessons from staff and contact information for students that have expressed an interest in tutoring. I'd try that if you can. That is how I found the tutor that we were working with in French, she graduated and DD didn't want to learn with anyone else. :glare: The price was really reasonable, 2 lessons per week and only $100 per month. Perhaps an online tutor would work for you. Through google search of "online German tutor" several options appear.... http://www.verbalplanet.com/learn-german.asp http://www.germanonlineinstitute.com Good luck!
  10. Greetings, My DH's job is potentially being transfered there (Yay!!) and I would like to get an idea of what the area is like. We have both been to the UK and Ireland but not mainland Europe. Any advice you can give (areas to live, schooling....etc) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  11. We haven't been at it long...so far our fails are.... Sequential Spelling.....just, no....complete waste of our time 1st Step Science and History from Currclick....loved the format but so much misinformation and spelling mistakes.... :cursing: Intellego Countries and Cultures....seemed disorganized and not at all streamlined, lots of busywork. ZB Cursive....I didn't buy the teachers manual to see if there were specific teaching methods because it cost 3xs the amount of the workbook.... BJU English 2...I didn't realize it was religious, that was my big newbie mistake. I love the layout though and wish secularizing would have worked for us... I did order Elemental Science but when I looked through the book it didn't seem a good fit. I will say though that the customer service at ES has been wonderful. I also ordered AAS and didn't dig it so back it went.
  12. I made the jump and had it printed and bound yesterday at Office Depot, it came out great and only cost me $25. We are starting at Y1, which I imagine will progress rather quickly since she is comfortable with K through late second math. My goal is to get us all comfortable with the methods and go on from there. I also think supplementing word problems is a must in my situation. Thanks to everyone that posted! I feel much better about jumping in.... ladydusk and stripe - hope today is better than yesterday :thumbup1:
  13. Perfectly alright, it would be the kind of info that I would be interested in hearing should we choose to go this route!
  14. My DD began with SM in 1st and part of 2nd. For the remainder of 2nd we have been using MM. She does okay with it but I constantly have to make extra practice worksheets. We have had to stop and revisit several lessons because it seems like it isn't sticking, even with the extra practice. Both DH and I have had taught and retaught many lessons and it seems like we aren't making much headway. I've seen various recommendations for MEP (Mathematics Enhancement Programme) and I like the look of it, it seems Singapore like and I know my DD is fond of logic puzzles. I'd like to hear from those that have used or currently use MEP. What did/do you like about it? If you don't use it anymore, how long did you use it? Finally, did you use MEP as a full curriculum or supplement? I'd like to decide on a math curriculum this year and stick with it through the remainder of DDs education. For information purposes we left Singapore because we were planning to return to a private school in 3rd grade and wanted mathematics to follow more closely with American scope and sequence. I am also considering Saxon Intermediate 3 and I do realize that it is totally different than MEP. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
  15. I'm glad you brought this up, I completely forgot. We had ours at the vet because she stopped eating and drinking completely and her coat lost its shine. Per the vet we started feeding her this http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3135800&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo He said that we shouldn't need any further vitamin c supplementation since it is a high quality food (we were also looking for an alternative to timothy since she won't touch it). It has been a year since we had her vetted and her health is outstanding. I just feed her the food, "dust" with vitamin c once per week, and she gets a "salad" once per week too.
  16. Panipuri in Delhi India! Savory ingredients in a fried puff, to die for....
  17. I am not an outdoor person at all but our favorite family vacation was to Arkansas. We camped, hiked and fished at Ouachita (wash-it-taw) State Park and mined for quartz crystal at Coleman Quartz. We stayed for 4 days - Sunday arrival through Wednesday evening. When we were there, we dug for crystal on Monday and they only bring out loads from the mines 2 times a week...we didn't know the schedule but got really lucky. It was awesome. You can rent boats for use on the lake and they also have cabins and a lodge available. We can't wait to do it again! http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/lakeouachita/#.Uw0aq0rwnis http://www.colemanquartz.com/default.html
  18. We got two female cavies two years ago from Petco. The larger female (Stargaze) was aggressive toward the smaller one (Bella) and putting them in separate cages was something we couldn't afford. Bella went back to the store. Stargaze lives alone in a pretty large cage. She is a large cavy and eats a lot! We buy a 5lb bag of food from Petsmart and it lasts about 2.5 months. Stargaze will not eat timothy hay but loves fruits and veggies. We take her out to play daily. My DD builds "obstacle" courses for her to maneuver. The funniest thing she does is flatten into a pancake when you pet her. She also purrs, whistles and sings. Stargaze also loves to swim! In the bathtub during the colder months and outside in the kiddie pool in the summer. We built her a platform/ramp so she can get out of the water, she will get up there to rest and them jump (yes...jump...submerged head and all) back in. I clean her cage (wash it out) every week. Bedding is pretty expensive. I use Kaytee. As the above poster said, don't use cedar, in fact I wouldn't use any hard or soft wood bedding. We tried felt but I hated it. As far as biting...Stargaze will absolutely know when she is done with attention and you can tell she is about to bite when she makes a growling noise which is different from a content purr. My DD often ignores her warning and therefore gets bit. I'm not sympathetic to DD at that point. It would be important to have a child understand and be able to take cues from a cavy or any animal for that matter. As far as vacation, we often go away for a weekend - Friday through Sunday. We put in the extra large bottle and gravity feeder (which holds more food) since we do not have anyone available to keep her. I'd recommend cavies in pairs so long as they work well together. C and C cages are awesome and I wish we had gone that route. I love our cavy, she is a lot of fun! and I don't know about dinner but you might get one to dice carrots...lol Good luck.
  19. Daily - Dishes, floors, laundry, and declutter....My DH and DD leave stuff EVERYWHERE! Daily - fight with DD to get her room cleaned, almost never happens....pulling out my hair as we speak Our house is on the market. Friday-Sunday I deep clean EVERYTHING and organize closets that have come undone. I'm exhausted and I hate chores.
  20. We tend to use the real words here at home when it is just us and have had discussions about when it is okay to curse out loud. When my dd is out or with family that wouldn't approve she uses "crab nuggets" and "cheese and crackers", usually she laughs so much she forgets whatever she is frustrated with.
  21. Personally my husband and I can't wait to sell our home and go back to renting. We purchased our home back in 2007 very quickly because we were put on a time limit by our landlord. The landlord of the apartment complex went into bankruptcy and the bank decided to evict all 1200 residents over a three month period. We wanted to stay in the area for the schools but there were no rentals available within a reasonable distance. We had to put our things in storage and move into a hotel until we could find something. We paid $120,000 for our house and at the time our property taxes were around $2500 per year. Since then, we have decided not to use the schools (too many problems to list) and our property taxes have increased by $1300 per year and the cost of living in our area (gas, groceries...etc) has exploded. Unfortunately income has not increased and we are bleeding. When you are tied down to a house you can't adjust your living conditions to fit finances. My biggest complaint is home maintenance. Ours is an older home (1954) and the previous owners did not take good care of it. In the time we have lived here we have put up quite a bit of money in emergency repairs. The most recent is sewer problems but we have had to repair the structure, roof, tuck point the exterior, boiler, a/c, and drainage and we have only been here about 6.5 years. Lots of $$$$ that we could have used on vacations, school supplies, and a savings account. There also isn't a lot of time to complete projects since we work so much. The whole "pride in home ownership" is lost on us. It has been on the market for 6 months and we just dropped the price. We are not looking to profit, we just want to zero the mortgage loan and there is no way we would ever get back what we put in. Sorry for the rant, wanted to be sort of "real" here. :nopity: Basically, everything we have had to put into the house has equaled less time together as a family due to us working all the time. Owning a home is right for some and not right for others. You know your priorities and can figure out what is best for you. Good luck.
  22. Hello TWTM families! I am interested in getting my 8 year old started with notebooking. Can anyone share notebooking related resources or a how to book to get us started. I'd like a place for her to organize her research in a fun and creative way. We are interest led as far as science, history and literature topics are concerned which means I would like to have 4 notebooks running (the mentioned topics + biographies). I've posted in several other groups and so far no responses, there has to be some family somewhere that notebooks!! How did you get started? How do you keep organized? Thanks.
