  1. Amy, I am very sad to know that we won't be able to use WT3! This curriculum has been an answer to prayers! Connie
  2. I have 2 boys (almost 9 and almost 11) who are finishing up LFC A. They are pleading to not continue to LCF B. I have been putting Spanish on the back burner while we focused on Latin. I've heard some good things about SS, but also SFC. Is one better? Thanks! Connie
  3. My ds is in 5th grade and really struggles with writing - the physical act, as well as the mental act. Writing Tales 2 has been wonderful! I don't know what we'll do next year as there is no WT3! Connie
  4. We are almost in the same situation. I have a 7th grader and 5th grader doing SL core 5 this year - we are on week 10. The EHE is boring for my older child (busy work) and overwhelming for my 5th grader. I love the idea of just doing research on some of the countries. I've thought about using the EHE answer key and giving them the answers to fill in and later doing a "Jeopardy" type game. Hang in there! SL is too expensive to give up on and does have lots of great books. Oh, another fun thing that I've found is from Highlights. It's a packet of info on each country of the world. It's about $15/month. Connie
  5. My daughter, if she were enrolled in ps, would be in 7th grade. However, she's taking 9th - 10 th grade level (some subjects) classes. She's doing Abeka grammar for 8th grade and it's monotonous. We are also doing Lightning Lit 7 and breezing through; Henle Latin 1, Spanish 2 from Glencoe are the other languages. She doesn't do diagramming with the Spanish though. She's incredible strong in language and will be taking the ACT this December. So, if we did grammar for next year, what would your recommendations be? Should we stick with Abeka? Or is there a program that is more thrilling? Thanks for all your advice! Connie
  6. Grammar, as a stand alone program, is driving us all nuts. It's more like busy work for my daughter. What grade is it "ok" to stop grammar? Or do we continue all the way through high school? Connie
  7. We tried Apologia Botany 1-2 years ago and it was way too much info. Maybe now would be better, although he's not thrilled with plants ( and for a whole year!). Do you have to do them in any certain order? The flying creatures and the land animals look fun. Connie
  8. Thanks! We may try that. I really think that we will wait on BJU 7 for him and go with just a general science.
  9. I had it all figured out and it was supposed to go smoothly... I planned on my 7th grader and 5th grader doing BJU Life Science together (5th grader is science-y). Life science has been incredibly detailed and is just bogging him down. I need to find a different program for him. Suggestions?? Thanks, Connie
  10. I am just very uncomfortable with opening a door of opportunity for children to slide down a slippery slope. But, we do not even agree with dating - more the courting. So... I am a huge prude. Connie
  11. I have one that struggles with grammar. We tried EG and it just didn't click. Once we started diagramming, a lightbulb went on and he seems to get it. Maybe the visual aspect of seeing the sentence broken down instead of all of the words just running together on the page. My 2 cents, Connie
  12. A surprise backpack! Love it! We are going for a safari for my husband. We'll also go to Kruger National Park. We'll be able to have a guide take us into the nearest village ( however close that may be) and give us all a tour. They will also get to watch/help with day to day living - food prep, etc. I want my children to come away with a heart for missions and a realization of how blessed they are to be Americans. I am very nervous, but excited for my children. Connie
  13. we will be out in the bush - no other playmates. But, we could maybe pack a baseball and glove. A soccer ball would be to big to pack. I've already thought of the journaling/drawing aspect. I am trying to keep us all from going crazy. It will be an experiance for us all. My children will learn the true meaning of "making do with what little resourses you have." Thanks for the suggestions! Connie
  14. Did you download the audiobooks to an Ipod or take books on CD? I'm trying to decide which would be the least trouble - I have no idea how to download to the Ipod. Connie
  15. We will be traveling for almost 3 weeks. They will have a gameboy and ipods. I HATE thinking about 10 + hours playing games!! We will be in Africa - no tv, no radio - you get the picture. I am looking for easy - pack, take alongs for entertainment. My children are 8, 10, and 12. I've thought of books, but there's no way I can take enough books for them for 19 days. HELP!! Connie wife to most wonderful husband, almost 16 years mother to dd 12, ds 10 and last, but not least - ds 8
  16. Kirstin, His ability to focus on the task at hand (school work!)and to better follow 2-3 step commands was dramatic, as was the decrease in becoming over stimulated. He just seemed calmer, more peaceful. I am not sure if it's a "one time thing" or if you are to continue it over time. I have no negative comments about it. It was expensive, but so very worth it. Connie
  17. I don't know how old your child is... My son is 10. Here's what we found so far: Spelling - Sequential Spelling has been a lifesaver! Math - Teaching Textbooks Grammar - First Language Lessons 3 (we'll move on to FLL 4 this year. After that, we'll go to Growing with Grammar. The diagramming just makes sense to him. Science - anything hands on Handwriting - Handwriting without Tears is fabulous Writing - we did Bravewriter this year. I think for a formal program, we'll try SWB's WWE or Writing Tales. Connie
  18. We used it at home 3 times a week. Our OT would bring the equipment and go to a quiet room, shut the door and do the training. It was remarkable the difference it made. Connie
  19. My 2 boys (8 and 10) have always shared a room. They don't really have "my toys" and "his toys". But, they do need a place to be alone. We have bunk beds and they are off limits to anyone without being invited. We also have a sleeper loveseat so that when company comes, there's a spot for them, too. As far as closet space, we use that to store toys. They each have a dresser for their clothes. Hope that helps some! Connie
  20. "I really think this program will work based upon the learning styles of your child" I agree wholeheartedly. My oldest "got it" and so did my youngest. However, my middle child just could not grasp EG for whatever reason. We did FLL 3 this year and it clicked. I think that EG is a great program, depending on the child. Connie
  21. Actually, sounds like the neighbor girl is "not the right kind of friend" for your daughter. Expain to your dd how precious she is and that she should expect people to treat her with respect - and if they don't... well, they don't deserve her friendship. Connie
  22. Have you looked into this? It's an excellant alternative to Girl Scouts. Connie
  23. I am jumping in here. Lori, Thank you so much for this schedule! We'll begin LL7 in the fall and I am very excited! Connie
  24. WOW! These look great! My boys will be in 4th and 6th grades when we do AH again. We are finishing world history now and will do Sonlight's core 5 this next year for 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades (we decided to do this now since we are spending time in Africa this year). I do love my Sonlight books and maybe I can also add in these, as well as the US books mentioned above. Thank you all! Connie:lol:
  25. What curriculum do like the best for teaching American History? I have an old Sonlight core 3 and am considering selling it and trying something different, although I LOVED it. Any recommendations? Thanks! Connie
