  1. I have a 3rd and 5th this year... we started off doing a hodge podge together and I ended up getting Life Pacs Science for them. They read through each packet and answer the ?'s. We do an experiment here and there, and they take tests. It's not the most fun science ever, but it gets the job done. :>)
  2. Hi Amy! Sorry about your little one's immobilization. Have you thought about United Streaming on DiscoveryChannel.com? Lot's of educational videos there! Hope your little one is well soon.
  3. Phys. Ed. She HATES to move her body. Does forcing her to walk on the treadmill 3 times a week count? :>) I am not familiar with a good logic/rhetoric program. Can you recommend one? It would definitely need to be one that she could do independently.
  4. I think I am going to do the same. BJU wasn't enough literature for a family coming from Sonlight. I LOVE SL's literature, but feel that I need more tangible results for a grade (tests) for high school level work. Hewitt also offers online classes for their lit and will grade/keep transcripts for you.
  5. What do you use for lit? I am planning on using Notgrass for this next year, as well. BJU actually looked drier to me than Notgrass! I think I am biased against BJU for the year as we've been trudging through a couple of the courses.
  6. I have changed my mind multiple times about what to use for my dd next year. I just need someone else to tell me that this looks good or I need to change something. My dd will be technically 8th grade, but is advanced in most areas. So, here goes... Apologia Biology Notgrass Exploring America LL Early - Mid and Mid -Late American Literature Henle Latin Spanish 3 LOF Advanced Algebra piano drama club I am thinking of the Hewitt online for the LL and for the Spanish 3, the Potter's School (or maybe just BJU dvd's- we've had a tutor up to this point). I am going to begin a transcript for her this next year and will count this as 9th grade instead of 8th - I think. Input? Thoughts?
  7. She is going into "8th" grade by her age. However, she's extremely gifted and reads EVERYTHING. She read Shakespeare 3 years ago for the 1st time and understood it! I am looking for something to challenge her. She is a wonderful writer of fiction, but I want to expose her to the CW style of writing. I guess I could wait on the literary analysis until a later age, but truly, will count next year as "9th" grade. Here are the courses she'll take: Henle Latin 2nd year Spanish 3 Notgrass Exp. America with SL 100 books thrown in LOF Advanced Algebra/ Saxon supplements CW for Older Beginners ?LL ? Apologia Biology piano drama club She could read all the Hakim books easily - we go to the library 1-2 times/week. I realize I am rambling and I am sorry. Just trying to get all my thoughts out.
  8. Veronica, I was thinking of buying the IG for SL 100 and using the guide for extra lit. to read. My dd will be doing Classical Writing for Older Beginners, as well. Do you think that the LL for Amer. History would be too much? I don't want to overload her, but I do want to challenge her. Thanks!
  9. Have you used Potter's School before? Am I assigned a certain time each day to log on? What would happen if we were unable to do that?
  10. Has anyone used this? What is your opinion of the program? We've used a tutor along with Glencoe's Spanish program for the last 2 years. Our tutor will not be an option for next year and I am unable to help my child this far along in the language. I was thinking of using the dvd program.
  11. Beth, Thank you so very much! I will begin searching the CW boards. Have a blessed day!
  12. Funny you should ask that! I am in the middle of a discussion with Beth from SW WA about what to use for lit/writing next year. But, so far, here's how it's looking: 8th grade- Apologia Biology Notgrass Amer. History CW - Homer and Diogenes? or LL American Spanish 3 Henle Latin Life of Fred Adv. Alg./ Saxon Alg 2 piano lap swimming for PE 6th grade- Life Pacs Science 6 Life of Fred Decimals/ Key to Decimals GWG -6 Sonlight core 3 HWT Sequential Spelling ?writing program - we are struggling our way through WT2 Spanish for Kids piano karate 4th grade- Life Pacs science 5 Teaching Textbooks GWG 5 WT 2 Spelling Workout Reason for Handwriting Sonlight core 3 Spanish for Kids piano swim team
  13. We are doing LL 7. She's enjoyed it - she loves to read. I've had some concerns that it's not stretching her enough with her writing skills. This is the child that would dictate stories to me when she was 5 to have them typed up. She voluntarily writes stories (some 25 + pages). With 3 children (2 boys), I am not thrilled about the teacher intensive part. But, the Kathy Weitz cd's sound great! I am using Writing Tales with my boys and loving it. So, I guess I should just jump right on in and maybe do Homer this summer? Could we "breeze" through it in a summer?
  14. Well, then, would you recommend CW instead of LL since we will have the literature with the Notgrass history? She's an excellent fiction writer - but nothing like Jackie's son. Wow! I would love her to be able to write in that form. Is CW hard for a parent? I've heard that it's very, VERY teacher intensive. Thanks a million!
  15. Is the LL not enough writing? What does the CW have that is "extra"?
  16. I am planning to use LL American) next year for my 8th grader to correlate with Notgrass Amer. History. Do I need a separate writing program as well? I've noticed that some of you use LL and CW. She's an excellent writer. Thanks for your help!
  17. Are there any tests for this? Or do I make my own? Or do you just not do tests? Thanks!
  18. UGH! I had a long post and just lost it!!! I need to reread TWTM - it's been a couple of years. I do cherry pick and use boxed ( SL for history). I am thinking of Notgrass US history and LL Amer. Lit for next year though. Her other courses this year are: Henle Latin 1 Spanish 2 BJU general science TT Alg 1 and LOF Beg. Alg. She's weakest in math and I want to really focus on that and make sure she's well grounded. LL 7(big mistake - should have put her way ahead - she's bored) Abeka 8 English (yuck!) Need suggestions! Piano lessons drama club Any curriculum suggestions/tweaks are welcomed!
  19. Thank you! Congratulations to you and your son, as well. Are you going to pursue higher level classes and have him finish high school early? Or will you keep him grade level and go deeper?
  20. Testing for AP classes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can any of you point me in the right direction? Is a homeschooler allowed to test for AP credit? How do I find this information? I am in a situation that I don't know what to do - my 12 year old is a challenge to teach, but in a good way. She is technically 7th grade. However, she's way above grade level is most all subjects. I'd like to go deeper, do more, but don't even know what direction to head in at this point. We received her ACT scores today and we were blown away. I don't want to keep her grade level, as she's easily bored. But, what about high school credit? She's already in Spanish 2 for instance, but I have no idea if I can count it for hs credit or not? I know this has all been asked before and I appreciate your insight. Thank you, __________________ Connie hs'ing dd 12 , ds 11 today (12/28):, ds 8: and loving it!
  21. Thank you all for the advice. It is a blessing to be faced with this issue and definately a challenge. I am not sure what to do yet - still praying and thinking. Our family moves quite a bit, so don't know if an umbrella school would be our best option or not. The local ps is not home school friendly, but GA is not very cozy with hs either. I will ask this on the accelerated board as well, but do you think that it's best to keep her "grade level" and just go deeper rather than focus on AP courses and faster?

  23. These are all wonderful bits of wisdom and I thank you for them. My ds has Asperger Syndrome along with a myraid of LD's. Fine motor skills are very difficult for him. He has been able to stay grade level with all the concepts of math. How truly important is it to have to copy from the book each problem? Did I mention that he's legally blind w/o glasses and wears bifocals at 10 years old? I like the folding paper under the problem to be worked, but many times the #'s are too small - he writes like a 5 year old (really large and messy). We've been trying TT and I love that he enters the answer into the computer. But, at what grade does this stop? I am trying to assist him, but not enable him. I hope all my rambling makes some sense to someone. Thanks for all of your help. Merry Christmas!
  24. Which Singapore level does Beg. Algebra correlate with?
