  1. I have completely switched all of my children to Teaching Textbooks for this very reason. My daughter had used Saxon up to Algebra II but we used Jacobs for Geometry this year. It was a complete flop. It is a great text but I am not good at math. My daughter is but I decided she needed a "teacher". I can't help her when there is a problem I don't understand. To be completely honest I don't have the time or patience to teach myself these concepts so I can work with her. So now my oldest daughter is using TT for Geometry. She really enjoys it. I know there are many negative opinions about TT out there but for us it is the best choice. I'm so glad there is an affordable math program for families who need it. God Bless, Elise in NC
  2. My husband travels approximately 4-6 days a week for about 36 weeks a year. This has been the way we have lived for the past 13 years. It can be difficult but not impossible. It has built up confidence in myself. I'm much stronger than I ever thought I could be. Also, now that the children are older it is much easier. It was hard when they were all little. I think it's really sweet that your husband is that concerned about you! God Bless, Elise in NC
  3. I totally understand your frustration. Here is what we are using for my upcoming 11th grader: MFW World History We used Ancients last year and it was very Bible integrated. I actually really loved it for my daughter. She felt it lacked a little in the amount of reading. So this year we are going to add in some of the literature reading from Omnibus V. MFW has American history scheduled for it's 11th and 12th grade years. It included Govt and Econ. My daughter did Core 100 with SL for 9th grade. I wish I hadn't done that. She did Ancients this year, will do World/Medieval next year (11th grade), and we will have to figure out what to do for 12th. You can easily do your own LA, science, and math with MFW. My next oldest will just be using Bob Jones for 8th grade history. Not my favorite choice but she detests literature based programs. I am going to use HOD Preparing with my two youngest children in the fall. I have never used HOD and am planning on tweaking it to meet our needs. My oldest has learning issues so I think this will be challenging enough. We will use our own LA, math and spelling. I will not be changing these. I am going to use their science. It looks like a perfect fit for us. Anyway, not much advice but I totally understand where you are coming from. I have had knots in my stomach trying to get a plan together for this year. God Bless, Elise in NC
  4. I totally agree. Because some of the other adult leaders spoke with my daughter and agreed that it had gotten out of hand we don't need to have a "confrontation". I asked dd if she wanted me to pick her up but she said after having the above conversation she wanted to stay. I do think dh and I will have a chat with the youth pastor and explain how we felt that one of the games went overboard and in the future they should consider the message of peer pressure they are sending. Thanks for all the advice. God Bless, Elise in NC
  5. I love my large laundry room. I would never want to give that up. Also, I would want an attached garage. We do have an attached garage but it is only a one car garage. We have all the kids bikes, camping gear, lawn mower, etc. in there. So I guess I would like a large, attached garage. God Bless, Elise in NC
  6. I found out from my daughter that it was a frozen raw fish. That actually made me feel much much better. She did say some kids did sit out but she felt a lot of pressure to "help out the team". Some of the other adult leaders spoke with her and agreed that the game had gone way too far. I am much more calm now. I agree that my husband and I should sit down with the youth pastor and explain how we love that they want to have fun with the kids BUT we are trying to teach them how to overcome peer pressure not succumb to it. Thanks so much for the advice! God Bless, Elise in NC
  7. The youth leaders are adults. Most of them are in their mid twenties to late twenties. Some of them have children of their own. Thank you all for confirming my feelings! God Bless, Elise in NC
  8. I am so angry right now. Please talk me out of chewing out the youth pastor at our church or give me some ammo please. My two daughters, aged 15 and 13, are at our church's Spring Breakaway. It is a retreat for the youth where they have fun but also have wonderful services. They are at the beach. Today I received a text from my daughter that she would never come back again. I finally was able to talk to her. Apparently they were having the kids play a "Fear Factor" type game. They were playing games like bobbing for spam in a bucket of pickle juice. I'm actually ok with that. It's gross but not dangerous. Today they pressured my daughter into putting a dead fish, head first, into her mouth. I asked her why in the world she would do that. She said she felt so much pressure and the adults were yelling for her to do it for her team. She ended up throwing up and that may have embarrassed her as well. My husband and I were both in a fraternity and sorority. We NEVER experienced hazing like that. In fact our chapters would have been revoked if anything like that occurred. I just can't believe that ADULTS would condone that behavior. They actually came up with the game! What would you do? Just think it's just stupid games for teens or is this a matter of endangering the health of children? Thanks for reading! God Bless, Elise in NC
  9. My daughter is finishing up with the last LA R&S book. We have used it since 4th grade. I do believe it has been a little overkill on grammar, BUT she also took the ACT at 12 and scored a 29 on that section. She is a natural when it comes to grammar and writing but R&S really helped her. Every year her standardized test scores for Language Arts are pretty much perfect. OTOH, my other children would bang their head against the wall if they had to use R&S. They are all using CLE which is quite similar but they seem to like it. God BLess, Elise in NC
  10. Thank you so much for the information! I am going to order our test prep book today! Looks like the McGraw Hill book is it. God Bless, Elise in NC
  11. My daughter will take the PSAT in the fall. I'm curious whether we should use a PSAT prep book or just a regular SAT prep book. Is there any difference? Also, will there be a writing portion on the PSAT? Thanks so much! God Bless, Elise in NC
  12. I just checked the website and the only versions that will have automated grading for the fall will be Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Hopefully they will change the other levels next. God Bless, Elise in NC
  13. That is SO exciting to hear! I hope they get all the levels done! Hopefully there will be a response here soon! God Bless, Elise in NC-
  14. I am planning on using Omnibus V for my oldest daughter who will be in 11th grade in the fall. She is well acquainted with classical works since she took a philosophy course this year. They studied Plato, Augustine, etc. and read original works. She really really enjoyed the philosophy course and Omnibus seems to be something she would really enjoy. My concern is the amount of reading. I posted previously that she will be quite busy with other activities and classes in the fall. I am wondering if she could just do the primary readings and add in a few secondary readings if she had the time. Would she still be able to receive 3 credits for Omnibus without all the secondary readings? Thanks so much for reading! God Bless, Elise in NC
  15. Congratulations! Your post is very encouraging to me. I hope I will be able to post the same thing in about a year and a half!!! God Bless, Elise in NC
  16. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but we have been very happy with Write at Home. I think for a full course it is a bit pricey but basically you are paying for a private writing coach. My daughters have both taken full school year courses. My oldest daughter took the research paper workshop this spring and I was very happy with that. They also have a program that allows you to pay for individual papers at a time. Hope that helps, Elise in NC
  17. I have been thinking of doing the same thing with my daughter who will be in 8th grade in the fall. I had her watch some of the sample videos for History, Science, and Literature. The only one she actually liked was the Literature class. She felt like the costumes were silly. I thought it was a bit silly myself but I thought the actual content was good. So, at this point I'm not sure if we are going to use the DVDs or not. Hope you get some answers from past users about time. That was another concern of mine. How long would she have to be in front of the screen per day. Also, would she be working through her worktexts during "class time" or is that considered homework. My daughter would not be happy if she spent several hours in front of the computer or TV and then had to finish all her reading and worktexts after. Thanks, Elise in NC
  18. Oh Cordelia those were the words I longed to hear! Thank you so much. My two oldest are quite independent. They can do so much on their own with my help when needed. The wonderful thing about homeschooling is being able to customize everything to meet each child's need. But...that makes it very hard for momma, as you well know. Thank you so much for the encouragement!! God Bless, Elise in NC
  19. Forgot to mention that my oldest daughter has done Rod and Staff since 3rd grade. She is done with grammar and writing instruction. She is in the Duke TIP program and scored really high in English on the ACT when she was 12. So, that is a better explanation for why I am not scheduling an "English" course for her. Omnibus will include History, Theology, and Literature. Thanks so much!! God Bless, Elise in NC
  20. Thank you so much for the input! I really really appreciate it. Omnibus will include writing. Also her government and econ class will be quite heavy on writing. My oldest is very very strong in writing so I am not concerned with that area. The three younger kids need more work with writing. It is so good to hear others who are homeschooling several children with kids in high school. I know lots of homeschoolers in real life but none of them seem to stick with it through high school. It is so nice to hear back from others who have been there done that. Thanks so much! God Bless, Elise in NC
  21. Thank you Library Lover. I appreciate everyone's opinions. I will continue to evaluate all options throughout the spring. I think what I am most concerned about is Omnibus. My daughter is so set on doing it though. I have considered having her do it with Veritas Academy. God Bless, Elise in NC
  22. Write at Home online classes have been wonderful for my family. AAS has been a life saver for my youngest daughter. Teaching Textbooks has saved me so much time, can't imagine not using it for the long haul. Interesting thread! God Bless, Elise in NC
  23. Thank you Gina! It is so hard to prioritize! When I first began homeschooling I thought I would have it all figured out by now but I have found that each year brings new challenges. I agree about not putting too much pressure on courses my oldest isn't going to "specialize" in. She is passionate about piano and plans to pursue that in college. She is an excellent student and loves humanities and the arts. If she just does average for physics or pre calc I am fine with that. I just feel spread thin now and believe it will only get worse over the next two years. Then we will start on the downhill slope. Thanks so much! God Bless, Elise in NC
  24. Thank you Hedgehog! I reposted to the highschool board. Hopefully I will get more responses there. God Bless, Elise in NC
  25. Repost from General Board. Hoping to get some help. Hello Hive, I really need some advice. I am in the planning stages for next fall. My concern is that I am putting so much on my plate that I'm setting myself up for failure. I typically feel this way each spring/summer when I'm planning for the next year. I'm going to list each child's curriculum choices. My concern is not that THEY can do the work, but if I will have so much to do working with each child. Please let me know what you think! Oldest daughter will be 11th grade Omnibus V Physics Apologia Teaching Textbooks Pre-Calc Government and Economics (outside class with paid instructor) Spanish 2 Rosetta Stone Vocab from Classical Roots SAT prep Youngest daughter will be 8th grade Bob Jones American Heritage History Lightning Literature Grade 8 CLE 8th English Teaching Textbooks 8th grade Physical Science Apologia AAS Write at Home 8th grade composition course full year Wordly Wise Bob Jones Bible 8th grade Oldest son will be 5th grade CLE 5th grade English Teaching Textbooks 6 AAS Youngest son will be 4th grade CLE 4th grade English Teaching Textbooks 5 AAS I am planning on using HOD Preparing for my two youngest children. I will also use Drawn into the Heart of Reading for them. I'm just so worried about staying involved with my oldest two. The boys will need me quite a bit so I'm not concerned about keeping up with them. My girls are a different story. I know they still need me to stay involved with their history and literature. Also, my oldest two play musical instruments. Oldest competes in several events for piano and also has 3 students she is currently teaching piano. She also volunteers at a therapeutic horseback riding facility 3 hours a week. My oldest son has Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. My youngest will begin competing in level 4 gymnastics this fall. BTW, my husband travels approximately 36 weeks a year for his job so he is basically MIA. Thank you so much if you read all of my ramblings. I'm just a bit stressed about how will I ever get it all done!!! God Bless, Elise in NC __________________
