  1. Ah ha - an answer key - I just looked for one, and low and behold I found it! So very helpful. The one with the error was, ahem, me :cursing:
  2. I have noticed a few errors working through Math Mammoth so far. Or else I'm losing my mind. Does anyone know if Maria Miller has a place where she has posted / published corrections? I would really like to compare the pages we're working on to any known mistakes. We're doing 3a right now.
  3. You are doing 3 kids at once, using the same WWE level - did I get that right? Doing the summaries was a skill that took quite a bit of practice for us. You'll definitely want to make sure each child can do it, without listening to what another is saying and coming up with his answer that way. So I personally think that should be individual until you know they are understanding it well. You could separate them, or you could take turns letting one do it one week, and another the next, so they have the benefit of learning by example. Later you could have them work together and agree on a summary. Eventually you will pull dictation sentences out of their own summaries, so there is a benefit in combining that.
  4. I would love the link to the worksheets you mentioned! We did it last year, mostly as a read-aloud. I wish I'd done more of the supplemental activities to help make it stick. They did enjoy it, though.
  5. We had some tears with MM3 but I'm not ready to give up. I need to switch it to a time a day when his mind is fresh, plus I want him to learn how to work through subjects that aren't necessarily fun or easy. He can do it when he's focused and fresh; otherwise, I wouldn't feel this way. I've also found he responds well to a little hand holding and talking through the problems. I'd prefer him work independently but sitting with him discussing the problems help me pinpoint where the frustration is coming from. Many times it's just lack of focus and my presence right there keeps him on task. I'm sort of looking around just in case tears happen repeatedly. One thing I would consider is Beast Academy. Check out the samples online, and do the practice test (I thought it looked challenging). I would have to be at a point of desperation to switch because of the price, but I do like the looks of it.
  6. Good to know....it's barely used, and I can certainly find something else for the $$. It was my first pricey cosmetic purchase so it's new territory for me in that respect.
  7. It just seems wrong to me, but Ulta says they will take returns. I feel kind of funny about it - but I just bought something on the pricey side that is just not going to work. If it were cheaper I'd suck it up. If you have returned makeup you've tried at home, I'm wondering - is it no questions asked? Do they inspect it? Quiz you? Thanks!
  8. I know about Home Science Tools, but do you have any other go-to sites?
  9. There is a new show on TNT called Cold Justice. Solves very old cold cases (murders). Content might be too mature for 8yr old on some shows but it's not dramatized or glorified. It's very respectful of the deceased. Definitely pre-screen. How about finding DVDs/books where the solve historical cases, like the Ice Man or the how King Tut died, etc...? Should be plenty of material.
  10. You can get Minecraft PE on the Kindle. How attached is he to his worlds? He'll have to start from scratch if you switch. FYI - My son has both. He prefers to play on the Kindle.
  11. My guess would be how long she can be out and still get paid...(IE how much paid leave she has). In my experience it is unusual for any medical professional to be out without having some sort of coverage arranged, although perhaps for the more urgent cases, but coverage should be provided from day one. It's the norm. Otherwise, admin could then easily make a case for not needing your position. Maybe you could make it sound urgent and see what they say?
  12. Moved from TX 20+ yrs ago. Lived in Richmond 12 yrs and now in the Hampton Roads area 8+ yrs. I can answer questions about both areas if you have specifics. IMO Norfolk and Richmond are very different. It was an adjustment at first but I was young and open to anything. What I liked were the seasons and close proximity to the mountains and the beach (plus lots of places on the East Coast are within a days drive). I like having a little Southern Culture although it's different from the South. (Not sure if that makes sense).
  13. It has been a while since I worked in healthcare, but a few years ago when I regularly kept up with the latest, the role of inflammation was being closely looked at in heart disease, as far as promoting plaque formation in the cardiac arteries. Further, there was the thought you could have plaques that are stable and likely never to be a problem; or you could have unstable plaques that could break off and cause a blockage somewhere downstream. Statins were thought to be plaque-stabilizing. Admittedly I have not closely kept up with things, but did hear at one of the big cardiac conferences this past year, one of the controversies was that the literature is now saying saturated fat is no longer "a bad guy". That honor is now reserved for trans-fats alone. Anyway, I think your diet looks extremely reasonable. Eggs will always be controversial. Couldn't hurt to try having them every other day. You could ask they run markers for inflammation (C reactive protein). I would add some fish oil maybe.
  14. DC is very intimidating to drive in for me, not even counting traffic or parking. The streets don't make sense to me. I would use the metro as much as possible. Check Groupon, I have frequently seen deals for DC hotels.
  15. OK guys, thanks, I won't sweat it! I'll consider Briley my back-up/pit stop if I need it.
  16. Thanks - I'll take another look at the map. The last thing I want is to be stuck in traffic jam when we've been in the car all day. I want to have my options planned out! Unfortunately I have no smartphone or GPS, so I'm doing it the old fashioned way.
  17. I am going to be at the tail end of a 12 hr drive (tomorrow, Monday) trying to get to Dickson, heading west on I40. I am starting to think I my timing is going to get me into rush hour traffic in Nashville. Would you recommend staying on I40 or is there an alternate? I saw the 840 bypass but it seems kind of long. Thoughts?
  18. I am an RD. I have never seen a diet like that prescribed when someone is discharged from the hospital. Not questioning it, just saying I've never seen it. It's an odd one. [if I were working in that facility, I *would* question it and clarify a few things - I do wonder about the "no bread" (why that particular carb...very vague) and high Vit K (uncommom....usually it's low K)....FWIW]. "No salt" usually means no added salt in absence of a prescribed sodium level. Anyway, your dish sounds great. I would imagine you have some kind of broth that would add some flavor. As far as preparing meals, you needn't worry about hitting all those things she needs, but rather avoiding what she's been told to avoid, so she doesn't feel like she has to turn anything down. You are already being a huge help.
  19. I read this blog a lot. He regularly takes on the "research" published in the field of medicine. It's quite amusing to see how ridiculous much of the "studies" are. skepticalscapel.blogspot.com
  20. Oh yes, that is a difficult one, not much is known in the medical community about gluten sensitivity. But celiac does have a hereditary component so at least you can rule that out. I think I'd still want to know.
  21. What does he consider to be the novelty effect? I've never heard that term before. Since celiac is a lifelong disease and gluten free is the only treatment, I would want to know before putting a 6 yr old on what could be a lifelong diet. I would just want to be certain about it, personally. So I'm all for getting tests/definitive answers. Plus she will have to learn to do it on her own.
  22. Completely agree. Around here a haircut averages $40. Could be 1/2 hour or an hour of work. So $40-80/hr seems like a darn good wage to me. I don't get it. Are hairstylists really getting paid peanuts out of that? I sincerely want to know. It's making me resent tipping.
  23. Lots of the same marriage and hormone issues here.....thanks to everyone for sharing. Just wondering if you can elaborate on "moods". I am very introverted so I think my moods are not as much outwardly expressed as inwardly having dark thoughts that get on a downward spiral that's hard to break. For example, getting convinced I have cancer..... how awful my husband/marriage is......how trapped I feel and seeing no escape..... hating the way I look.... and of course when I am able to see/think more clearly I can tell that I was viewing things out of proportion to reality. Things aren't perfect for sure but there are times when I can't find one good thing or an ounce of gratitude. Everything is bad, bad, bad in my mind, for a time, and then I'll snap out of it. Repeat cycle. Anyway, just wondering about that. I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning at my next gyn appt. I always thought they would ask questions about that to put people on mood altering meds when maybe they are getting at hormonal stuff.
  24. We just finished MM2 and it was toward the latter part that we even got to carrying and borrowing and multiplication was barely introduced. Maybe she's not as behind as you think. You could work through some of MM individual subjects (blue series) and see how it fits. Super cheap way to try it.
