  1. We have a border collie mix who had some food aggression issues. We were told to feed her in her crate away from the other dog and rest of the family members.
  2. We did a cruise to Alaska 2 years ago and loved it. We went to the Seavy's and it was great. Got to hold the puppies, etc. My geography is not great so I don't know how far you are from Talketna but it was one of our favorite places. It is a really small town but it is where all the climbers go to begin their climbs of McKinley. You can see the mountain really well there and can go to the check in point where the climbers sign in before climbing and see various gear from the years and so forth. There is a homestyle restaurant there when you eat at long tables and we were able to meet and talk with some weekend climbers. They have the best breakfasts and cinnamon rolls.
  3. My dd was like this. She is 19 now and we survived. Raising the Spirited Child was a very helpful book. Lots of physical activity helped. I taught her how to roller blade and ride a bike as soon as was physically able. We also swam, she did swim team, and played indoor soccer in the winter and regular soccer in fall and spring. Playdough and playing with toys in the bathtub (with constant supervision) helped as well. She is very athletic and persistent and accomplishes just about anything she puts her mind to.
  4. Just getting back after a trip to take dd to college. Her name is Callie, short for Callaway. All of dd's cats are named with sports names. We have a Nike and Mizuno (Mizzy for short) also.
  5. The ones I am looking for may be a bit obscure and I would like to download them to Ipod Nanno or Iphone. I may consider other methods. Dd would like to listen to her college textbooks while reading along.
  6. She is deaf and is nervous about anyone approaching her but she is beautiful. My dd got her from a farm. She is listed as a dangerous animal at the vet but my dd is able to handle her really well and she is improving daily. She is a little off in that we find her doing unusual things like licking the condensation off the windows, jumping into the toilet, and sleeping in the sink. She loves water and will jump in the bathtub if you let her. She is all of 5 lbs but terrorized the 2 cats and 2 dogs we have now. My dd is leaving on Monday to go to school and her dog and then eventually this kitty will join her there.
  7. Are they doing bloodwork to check her thyroid? My mother and my dh both had resting pulses this high when they had overactive thyroids. Praying that they find the answer quickly.
  8. When my kids were young we lived next door to a family that went completely crazy at Christmas. They would save and find deals the entire year and one whole room would be filled with the boys' Christmas presents. When my kids went over to visit my son came back very disappointed. He said that Santa didn't like him very much because he didn't get a room full of presents. I told him that Santa consults with the parents and some parents don't think that having that many presents at Christmas is a good thing. So then ds was unhappy with both Santa and his parents. Life lessons at Christmas.
  9. Are the smells making you sick to the stomach or do you just notice them to an extreme? I know that when my immune system is down I can tell because normal smells seem really strong to me. If I go out to eat and someone is cleaning the table next to me I have to leave because of the strong bleach smell or if I am around any perfumes, deodorants, cleaning products, etc I feel dizzy and sick.
  10. Here is how it played out at our house with 19 yo dd. She has not been officially diagnosed but had definite Aspie tendencies. She picked out all her gifts ahead with our blessing and wrapped them and put them under the tree. She even picked out her gift from her 22 yo brother and wrapped that. She made a list of acceptable gifts that my parents and brother should get her and I helped oversee it. (Suprises are really stressful for her.) The only present she disliked was a small coach purse from my mom because it was unexpected and she said to my mom that she was taking it back to the store and getting money for it. My mom handled that really well. We went to Christmas eve service where she wore earplugs and worried if she would make it through the service due to the loud singing and organ playing. We had guests at my parents' house today and she arrived a little late, ate and visited, then left and came back with her dog so she would feel more comfortable relaxing and socializing. The good news is that she is making progress and has some coping mechanism in place and that everyone in our friend and family circle is very accepting, so it was all good.
  11. These all look really great! I think one of her issues is expectations about life and people. A book on perfectionism may help too if anyone has suggestions. She is a dyslexic perfectionist which she thinks is just a cruel joke. I try To point out all the positives with this situation which she sometimes will agree with but often does not
  12. Yes! I agree. We did talk a bit about this tonight because her golf coach has been talking to her about this lately and she takes constructive criticism much better from him than me. Beaners and Inna, thanks for the recommendations. I will check them out!
  13. for dd. She is a wonderful young lady but is definitely a glass half empty kind of girl. She's 19 so I need something deep and not preachy or hokey.
  14. My ds was in a similar situation his freshman year. He chose to leave, though, not because of his major but because the school was just not a good fit for him. He came back to our local cc and took classes before transfering to a state school the following fall. It was a very good decision for him. My ds is low key and typically a non-worrier but his unhappiness at that school really through him for loop. It was helpful for him to come home and have some down time, take some needed courses, before going out again. He adjusted really well at his 2nd school and was able to find roommates that he could live easily with, etc.
  15. Cattle ticks. They are the grossest, largest ticks you can ever imagine. We just moved to a new house in a newly build neighborhood. Our dogs were on the wrong flea/tick treatment for the state/area we were in and there were cows in the field across the lake. Our dogs got the largest ticks and we started to see them crawling across the floors and the wall. It didn't take too long to get rid of the all but it was the most freaky thing I ever experienced!
  16. Thanks for this information. It was very helpful. She has met her roommate. They will be in the same program and her roommate says that she is a neat freak who loves to bake which sounded very good to dd. I will have dd talk with her more about appliances and such. I would think if roommate likes to cook and bake (she has been living on her own) she may have some nice kitchen ware that she may or may not want dd to use. Either way we are fine with that but I just need to get her prepared. My ds has some roommate experience and while I would not describe him as extremely neat he really likes to have a weekly clean up time and it frustrated him when roommates were not willing to participate in this. For his last few semesters he has been able to find people that are neater than he is so he tries to keep things clean and it has been good for him.
  17. My dd is going leaving for college in Jan and will be living in an apartment. She will need some sharp knives that are good quality but not that expensive. I am totally clueless about knife shopping. Any other kitchen recommendations and supplies that you think she can't do without would be great too!
  18. I am hearing that it is all hype on a show I just turned to on tv. I know you ladies here are very well informed.
  19. Both of my kids went to ps kindergarten. It was a required skill to learn to tie their shoes. They both had trouble at this age (5). My dh finally taught them to make 2 bows on either side of the shoe and then cross the bows over and tie them together. Aparently dh had trouble learning to tie his shoes too and this was his solution. My kids are 21 and 19 and still tie their shoes this way. My ds gets some kidding from his friends for the way he ties his shoes. My dd, no one seems to notice.
  20. Not an iphone but I accidently washed dd's phone in the washing machine and rice did the trick.
  21. My dh was a religion/Greek major and my ds is an English/creative writing major. My dh was able to take his liberal arts education, which taught him how to reason and think, and have many different career experiences. He is now a financial planner and does basic math calculations is above average in math, but never would have majored in it. My ds is going to work for dh. Learning to communicate with clients is far more important for his success than taking numerous calculus courses.
  22. I have had mild pain in my big toe and on the bottom of my foot under my big toe for about a year. I bought really expensive shoes from The Walking Company and wore only those and my Clark sandals for the past year. The pain is getting progressively worse and now I have a rather large bump on the very top of my toe. I also have pain on the bottom of my foot under my little toe. I also have extreme pain in my foot when I wake up. Does this sound like a bunion? Is there anything I can to do help with the pain and "fix" this? I really don't want to go to a podiatrist but I will probably end up there soon. What can I do in the meantime? I also have a really hard time taking any anti-infamatory meds or just about any meds due to severe reflux issuings so that is probably out.
  23. There is a nice Marriot near the school. If you call them and ask for specials they may be able to give you a better deal over the phone. We have gotten really good rates there. They do have deals for PBA parents and may give you special pricing for a college visit, or special PBA rate. I know several hotels in the area do that.
  24. I will tell you my GERD story from about 1 year ago. I became so sick that I could not swallow. I had just had some dental work and I was beginning to think my throat was numb or something. But it didn't go a way and I began to get extreme pain behind my shoulder blades. I was taking a bunch of otc meds, doubling up on them, with no relief. I went to the GI doctor and he gave me dexilant 60 mg which is amazing but I didn't realize it at the time. It is newer and is a 24 hour timed release. I could not eat anything. I was so sick I couldn't even take care of myself. My entire stomach and back would hurt when I would breathe in. My dh is not good in these situations (bless his heart) so I ended up staying overnight at my parents' house so my mom would be able to help if I got sick in the middle of the night. For about 5 or 6 months all I could eat was grilled chicken with no seasoning, white rice, eggs and toast. Whenever I tried to veer from this diet I would get super sick. I am a year out from this now and I can eat like a normal person again. I do have to be careful not to overeat and I can't do much spice but I really thought I would never eat normally again. It is important to explore everything with your doctor but just having GERD can be this bad. I had severe anxiety and really felt like I was literally going to die. I really didn't think GERD could make you so sick. Trying another med may help. The doctor may tell you they are all the same but some people do better on one than another.
  25. My dd's border collie aussie mix will probably just wear a halloween bandana. She dresses up the cats in build a bear costumes, the poor things.
