  1. I have become a convert, too. I've been ill quiet a bit the last few weeks and reading in bed is so much easier with an ereader than with an actual book! And reading while eating (blush) is also much easier. I can't get many ebooks from my library though, Dutch libraries are much behind American ones in that aspect. (I would need to add another 30-euro-a-year subscription (to the regular 70 euro) to be able to loan 10 ebooks, only one at a time, and only from a very, very limited selection. Sigh. I'm waiting, people..... get moving with the times! :toetap05: )
  2. I missed the deadline for the second quiz, I had a migraine that lasted several days, so that was that :glare: . Although I wasn't looking forward to the essays, writing a peer reviewed essay in English makes me nervous. I'll let you know! I really like the professor so far, his enthousiasm is contagious. And I'm really enjoying The Odyssey, much more than I expected. It's a reread in the Fagles translation and I have read it twice before in different Dutch translations. It's getting better and more 'comfy' every time (ahum, comfy might not be the proper way to talk about such a classic....and obviously not when talking about all the slaughter...still, it's way more comfy than The Illiad :D).
  3. :hurray: I'm still reading at book 22 20 (let's not get ahead of myself here :D) , so I'm running a bit late. But I don't plan on doing the quizzes or essays for real, so it doesn't really matter. Did you write the essay?
  4. I'm back on schedule with reading SWB's History of the Ancient World :hurray: . I spent a lovely afternoon reading yesterday, while everybody was watching soccer :leaving: . I don't know why I always let this slip to the bottom of my reading pile. I'm interested in history, I really like SWB's writing style. I'm going to keep the schedule from now on!
  5. Eagle's description sounds great and I sincerely hope BFSU will prove as delightfull for your daughter! Be prepared, though, for your daughter to be finished with a lesson in 2 minutes flat, after you have spent a lot of time on preparations. Don't ask me how I know :glare: . It could have been the lack of appropriate science books, as those are not available in Dutch here. But it happened so often, after so many lessons, that it wasn't fun any more. I still look wistfully at my BFSU 1-2-3 books in my book case. Maybe I'll try next year with my dd5 and dd7 :D. Please, someone kick me now......
  6. ETA: I found it! That was quite a bit more difficult than I had expected (cough...DRM..cough). Technical question: I know some of you use Calibre to convert Kindle format e-books. Can someone explain to me how you do this? I bought a Kindle collection of Sir Walter Scott novels, but I need to convert it to epub for my Kobo reader. I have searched everywhere but I can only download it onto my ipad or (dh's) iphone and I want to download it to my computer. There should be some trick for it, but I can't find it.
  7. Ohh, tell me about it! I love Steven Erikson, but I haven't read this one.
  8. The Borac books, the Borac books, we :001_wub: Borac. (Well, except the Observation and Logic book...that fell flat. A lot of exercises just felt dumb or were not translatable into Dutch. Pairs of people and pairs of jeans, just isn't funny in Dutch.)
  9. Great post! And I really like your idea of doing content subjects a week at a time. I'm certainly going to try this.
  10. Congratulations! :D :D :D With triplets, I think it's time to get specialist care. What did your midwife advice?
  11. I do live near water, but we have no....I repeat....NO dangerous animals in the Netherlands. :hurray: After reading about the dangerous animals in the US/Australia/NZ all these years, I'll be probably too scared to ever visit any of you. England, I can handle, I think ;). Monica, thanks for your card, I loved it!
  12. Loved your post, Chelli! And I'm looking forward to your blog series.
  13. Hunter, what did those LCC oldtimers do in the high school years? Was that all dual enrollment? Or did those kids not go to university? I have always been LCC minded, but I have to prepare my kids for state exams, so I'm trying to see how far I can go with LCC before I have to conform to the regular course load.
  14. I'm also referring to K-6 schools. Our summer holiday is 6 weeks too. The 7-12 grade schools have an 8 week holiday. In the Netherlands the summer holidays are 'zoned', so it depends on where you live. There are three geographical zones, we are in the middle of the country which has *this year* the latest start of the summer holiday. So parts of the Netherlands are already on holiday.
  15. We are following the Dutch public school schedule, so we still have 4 weeks to go. We have done everything I planned and then some. So with almost everyone on this board on break, I'm starting to wonder what the heck I'm still doing . I'm such a box checker....I can't start our summer holiday a month early, can I?
  16. I'm so sorry for your loss. :grouphug: I'm glad you got to hold Joseph and surround him with your love.
  17. Thanks! I happen to already own From the Mixed Up Files, so we can start with that, while waiting for the other books. Great!
  18. Inspirational! :hurray:
  19. Thanks, Candicane, I appreciate you giving it so much thought! Yesterday, my dd selected 6 books from the list I made and I have great hopes that she will enjoy them. Now we will have to wait for the books to arrive, Bookdepository isn't quick...
  20. :seeya: Hi Jean and other tacklers :seeya: I haven't been here much, I'm trying to limit my internet time, I hope everyone is doing okay.
