  1. You posted previously about communicating with him about difficulty in your relationship with your dh. I think, perhaps, his current behavior is a reaction to what he perceives as the shifting waters within your familia relationships. He probably saw your marriage as an immovable force, as his sense of that changes, he may begin to question other "absolutes". I can't say whether your strategy for discipling him is the best one, but you might want to keep in mind where his "attitude" maybe coming from.
  2. I had one dedicated thumb sucker. We tried to gently wean him for about two years before finally buy the Thumbguard to prevent sucking. He stopped at around 6. He did damage to his palette and developed a tongue thrust that causes him to lisp. Thumb sucking can do damage, so I would encourage you to begin now to help him break the habit. Not all children are capable or willing to do this on their own.
  3. Well, it's an HBO production. They seem to need to include totally unnecesary sex and violence to stay "hip". I did enjoy the show, though. Sometimes you just need to over look the stupid.
  4. You might want to look into the Landmark books. They're a great way to supplement with depth.:001_smile:
  5. I'm planning on using SOTW with a 4th and 6th grader next year. I've made a kinda workbook out of the Activity Guide. My older guy will write out the answers to the comprehension questions, do a bit of vocab work that relates to the reading, do the outlining and map work, then every other week we'll alternate history/science writing assignments. Some of his lit reading will correspond to the history time period. Maybe we'll use some of the lit recommendations from TWTM. I won't have him to the outlining via Kingfisher. He'll be doing outling via science this year, so I don't want to over do it. I bought the test package and he'll do that weekly, as well. My rising 4th grader will simply listen in on our read aloud of the chapter, do the mapwork and write a short narration.
  6. I actually think this is a really difficult request. I looked high and low at the beginning of this academic year for a suitable spine for a 3rd and 5th grader. I found nothing that really satisfied. The History of US, while enjoyable and well written, was written for middle schoolers and was just to extensive (10 volumes) to cover in one year. This Country of Ours was too dated for my tastes. The textbooks (Abeka, Mcgraw Hill) were too textbooky. We've ended up using bits and pieces of the Hakim books, The Children's Encyclopeida, The American Story, and Boorstin's book. My older ds has also read several Landmark books. Hope you do find a spine that works for you. Someone should tell SWB to write a one year SOTW type book for American History. I'd buy it.
  7. Sola Michella, Well, if you promise not to encroach on my land or steal my pig. I'm all for peaceful coexistance!
  8. I really like your viewpoint, Plaid Dad. Our culture is so much more than simply our ethnicity. Everything that's happened in our own local and national experience adds to the layers of our identity.:iagree:
  9. Ever hear of the McCoy-Hatfield feud? My family decends from one of those classy hill-billy clans. I wouldn't say that's famous, more like infamous.
  10. Yep. California is going to hurt and hurt some more. Florida, too. That's what you get for being "bell-weathers".
  11. The actual materials cost of homebuilding is only a small portion of the total cost of the home. The land (ie. location, location, location) is really the larger piece of the pie. The dropping dollar actually relates more to capital availability. Dollar's are worth less, we are experiencing a dollar flight (flight to quality). Other countries that invest in American stock's and long term debt will take their yens, pounds and euro's elsewhere, creating a credit crunch. That, my friend, is the real danger. Our economy is largely supported by foreigners with capital (China, Japan, Middle east oil money -Qatar, Saudi Arabia) who want to earn on investments. Hey, that's what I've read in the WSJ, anyways.
  12. I completely agree with you. One set of my grandparents came to the US in the '30's. I have no cultural identification with where they came from. I have almost nothing in common with my foreign cousins. My other set of grandparent arrived in the US prior to the Civil War. That side of my family never identifies as something-american. My children have asked me about our ethnicity. I tell them where their ancestors came from, but then emphasize the fact that we are simply "Americans". Being of an some ethnicity in America is the equivalent of cheering for a sports team. It can be fun and interesting, but it has little meaning for most in reality.
  13. It's really not about bailing out "big business" (ie Bear Sterns). Bear is the largest holder of subprime mortage debt. If Bear folded their creditors would get in line to get a chunk of their remaining assets. Their remaining assets consist of under performing mortage debt. Those individual subprime's would be called in and individual mortage holders would need to pay up or lose their properties. Basically, a lot of homeowners would lose their property. That, ofcourse, would have a negative effect on real estate values across the country. Individual homeowners could see their property devalued by as much as 20%. You can guess the effect on homeowners who have taken out large home equity loans.
  14. Explain actually that to him. Does he care about advancing? If he does, then explain what he needs to do to advance. If he doesn't, I'd let it go.
  15. Because he enjoys it? Talk to his instructor. If he's concerned about his safety, then you can be concerned too.
  16. I agree with Ellie, here. If enjoys it let him continue, if not let him find another activity that he can enjoy. Other than a real physical disability, I wouldn't worry about whether he's progressing all that much. Some people are just not athletic. I think the trick with those kinds of kids is just to find "something" physical and productive they can enjoy and get exercise.
  17. JP Morgan is a Bank and has the capital assets for the transaction. The whole transaction is being underwritten (guaranteed) via the FED. JP Morgan held/holds the largest portfolio of subprime mortages. They wrote down nearly 80 billion in losses in prior weeks. Keep your eye on Goldman Sachs. They'll be writing down significant losses this week. To answer your eariler question: Last year we reallocated most of our capital assets into T-bills.
  18. Here's a link to a program called Language for Learning. I have a dear friend who's used this with her 5yo dd ASD with wonderful results. It's all about learning the necessary language skill to make higher order learning possible. If you click on the sample lesson menu button you'll see video clips of various lesson and the placement test. It's normally used in a pre-k classroom, but can easily be adapted for at home use. The program is really expensive if purchased from SRA and it can be a hassle to buy from them, but it's frequently available on e-bay. The older edition is really as good as the newer addition. Just a suggestion.:001_smile: https://www.sraonline.com/products.html?PHPSESSID=783e29906200a05c5865cf90fd12805e&tid=9&sid=3258&open=
  19. it's easier for the child to generalize later. I think this really has an effect on their ability to write clearly as the need to write with more complexity increases. That last sentence probably wasn't all that clear. I blame it on the complete lack of formal grammer in my ps education.:D
  20. Excellent book. I read it in 11th grade. I also like the movie with Henry Fonda.
  21. Again, this study wasn't intended or conducted to measure how VT effects READING outcomes. It measures specific visual skills before and after VT via tests designed by VT's. Really, they do prelimiary testing, find "inefficiencies", design specfic tests that remediate these inefficiences, and then post test. No where were actual reading measurements taken.
