  1. Thanks :) Dd has decided she would like to read it too, so it is now on the family kindle account. Dd and I are also going to read the Sue Grafton's together in order. In order is important to her too. I read A is for Alibi today. Really good and I remembered none of the case. I wonder what letter I will get to before I start remembering the book's plot? There are huge wait lists on my overdrive for some of her books. I am experimenting with hold suspensions etc to make these become available in a timely fashion and in order. Right now I am playing with hold lists and suspensions on all the books through G while waiting for B. Yes, my hold list is full with all of them but can't think of another way via the library and I am curious if I can make it work.
  2. Since both of you like it I might give it a try but I want to make sure it is a stand alone first. According to Goodreads it appears to be. Am I right?
  3. My kids have both used the ones on Coursera that are now on demand. Whole course so each lecture has problems and quizzes.https://www.coursera.org/learn/calculus1They are from Ohio State. Calculus 2 also availiable.
  4. Happy Birthday, Shawne!!! I have never read either of the Everest books or seen the new movie but I recently read the new novella by Kathy Reichshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25708561-bones-on-iceBones on Ice. This book might be a good quick read to go with the movie experience because it explains much of the physical effects of climbing Everest in detail and also the typical behaviour. I don't think it even mentioned this famous climb, just recommending it because it might be an easy way to gain perspective before veiwing the movie. From reading Idnib's links that might be helpful to understand the movie and the guide's actions. I also really liked the novella, which didn't have as much continuing storyline as most of her Brennan books. Fascinating stuff. It was mainly just this case....local girls body recovered years after death from Everest thanks to an avalanche. Brennan did tons of research in the book in order to properly autopsy the body and evaluate the story's of the girl's companions on her deadly climb.
  5. We arrived home late this afternoon and my washing machine has been going every since! We visited Paris and basically did a quick tour of the main attractions. As much as my boys could handle. Also paid a visit to the mouse (Mickey that is). We went on a great day. Beautiful weather and our longest line was 25 minutes (Peter Pan which is my favourite). Glad to be home, driving in Paris suburbs is stressful and dh is exhausted. I pulled over and made him drive when we got close. As far as reading goes I don't seem to be enjoying my Anita Blake series reread. I think I am quitting at this point. I read Magic Bites, the first Kate Daniels, by Ilona Andrews. It was good. My first spooky read is done! :) I also read Chase Me by Tess Baily. The first in her Broke and Beautiful series. It was good. They meet when the main character is working doing singing telegrams. Adolt content. Working on Horrorstor. So far it is good.
  6. I am not sure who to quote but this description makes sense. No idea about Inception but love Mission Impossible. Kathy :grouphug: to the plumbing problems. We are on a slab too but because of coal mines potentially under us. Very few basements in coal countrt. Everyone gets insurance when they buy, a friend knows they have a mine 5 feet down in back yard. We are good per survey because we are within 100 yards of a 900 year old church but still have the insurance. It was always illegal to tunnel under churches so they literally sit on pillars of coal. We did have major plumbing problems, it ended up being a bad connection thanks to the previous owner being a self taught handyman, but they wanted to bring in a very expensive ultrasound type device to locate the leak before digging. I finished my Amazon Prime/unlimited book for last month. It was one of those that leaves you withan I can't believe I read that feeling. It actually has a rating of over 4* on goodreads, I gave it a 2 only because I promised myself no 1*'s this year. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23381456-the-consequence-of-revenge. I will admit I picked it because the cover looked like a favourite tv show, Revenge combined with an odd fascination with The Bachelor.....just why? This book didn't help any of that curiosity.
  7. Dollhouse either is or was a choice on Amazon Fire tv here. I never even looked at it because I assumed it was a modern take off on Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls. The linked description has potential and I have a huge quilt to finish so please let me know what he thinks of it. Another Buffy fan here....although on rewatching I might like Angel better. Thanks for the Sweet Tooth description Jenn. I love it when I meet someone irl who reads my books. I have to agree that little Quebec town experiences a hugely disproportionate amount of shocking crime. Maybe once in 25 years...... Stay warm and dry Jane ond Onceupon a time (and everyone else).
  8. National identities are strong here. When we fill out census type info here it is legally by country of origin, dh and dc's are Scottish, I am English. Doesn't matter where you live now. For travel it isn't so much a lack of willingness not to leave their country it is more of a just have never gone or had the opportunity. Too be honest I know people in the US who have never ventured further than a couple counties from home. It just depends on the people but most people in England have been to London and visited Wales and Scotland a few times. The big one is N. Ireland......friends who have literally travelled the world have never been. According to an Irish acquaintance their moving to England was a huge, really huge event. Family members say that they will never see them again because they have never been to England. But many people are like your family and travel between contries frequently.....just realized we haven't actually left England for the other countries in the past year as far as travel within the UK but I have been to a few other EU countries and the US.
  9. Totally agree....cultural identities are very strong here. Many people don't really travel between the countries. People are surprised that we have been to Ireland. Traveling with poor internet connections. I am having problems liking and things take forever to load.
  10. :grouphug: To Robin qnd Idnib, I hope you both feel much better soon.
  11. I just finished the first book in Jodi Taylor's St. Mary's time travel series. These were mentioned by Sadie a few week ago as being favorite books. It was a good interesting read. Really enjoyed it and have already requested the rest. I can't get the half books (probably novellas) but found a library with the others. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25876872-just-one-damned-thing-after-another
  12. Faith :grouphug: I know you live in a rural area but see what services the Commission on Aging offers. I think they are organized by county in Michigan but I can't tell if it is active in every county.
  13. I found Horrorstor in my libraries overdrive. Can't wait. Looks like a fun book. I read Carrie as a teen....never again. I liked it then suspect I wouldn't now.
  14. I read several books last week thanks to several days in bed. Happy to be up and around again. My kindle stack is currently rather small when I ignore the spooky books for next week. I may just start early. ;) Still waiting for my banned book, The Great Gatsby, to arrive. I am currently next in line...... Last weeks reading included finishing Judith Cutler's Fran Harman series. I really enjoyed it.....Also read a couple more of the Jude Deveraux Edilean series. I am anxiously awaiting the next one in my order. These are fun.... one book present time, next histoical, present...all good, and they sort of manage to build the story. I also read another Fool's Gold. Eventually I will finish these. Almost halfway now!
  15. All I can say is Oh, my......I have no idea where we would put the stuff but fascinating. Thanks for the ideas (I actually really do mean this).
  16. That's always my fear when I turn the wifi on. I have been saved by slow wifi a couple of times too!
  17. Oh wow, my multiquote is working. Cannot believe it!!! I can't seem to find the Finno Ugrian Vampire or The Dracula Tapes. Happy to read any of the others. The Canterville Ghost is really good. Read it several years ago. Would be happy to reread. I didn't have a chance to look for the others but other than the anthology I think I should be able to find them easily....now watch a book by a common popular author will prove impossible! I didn't quote Stacia because I never expected multiquote to work. I really enjoyed Supernatural Enhancements and agree it might be a good one for many here. Looking at these ideas made me think of a discussion here regarding the fact that The Ghost and Mrs. Muir an all time favourite movie is actually a book too. There is also a TV series that we watched years ago thanks to youtube. I went searching and have reserved the book for dd and I. Looking forward to it.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/239437.The_Ghost_and_Mrs_Muir?ac=1 My other plans for Spooky October include continuing to reread some favourite Spooky series.....Anita Blake and Kim Harrison top my list. I also plan to finally finish Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series, which I really like but never seem to get around to reading when they are in the stack. They are so popular they always have to go back before I get to them.
  18. I can't resist commenting on the check out your books at the library topic if you dislike the author's politics at.....As many of you know I am really involved with my local library. I am not sure how this is handled in the US but here author's receive some compensation for books being checked out. Here is an author who is very verbal on the schemehttp://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/feb/13/libraries-horrible-histories-terry-deary. I feel the need to point one thing out, his books have always been common big box sales at discount bookstores etc. Roughly £20 for the whole collection (20 or so) so I suspect his numbers are off as far as how much he is losing. Here is another articl where he challenges Terry Pratchett who was a huge supporter of libraries.http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/feb/13/libraries-horrible-histories-terry-deary. One further comment is the fact that the UK has a huge system of libraries where books are free is a matter of national pride, sort of like the NHS. We are far prouder of the NHS but free books for all is referred to with pride in surprising places . There has been huge cuts in library services all over the country with many village libraries becoming community ran (volunteer). Very painful process for many.
  19. I read Sue Grafton's latest book X today. I know several of you read them, at least some of them so thought I would post. It was good. It read smoothly and was enjoyable. I was looking for a review and found this old interview which I enjoyed so thought I would share that insteadhttp://www.post-gazette.com/ae/books/2013/10/07/Sue-Grafton-Writing-her-way-through-the-alphabet/stories/201310070033 I never answered last weeks favorite book question because I didn't know the answer. Frequently I am disappointed when I return years later. For the most part my series books are still enjoyable....I had to quit reading Patterson but other than that I normally read all the new ones for several authors.
  20. Uggg...The last couple of years I have gone on a marathon with Booker nominees. I knew the short list was soon. Just don't feel like it this year. Once again I am sick in bed with some sort of a cold. I finished off three books that I had been reading, Red Bones by Ann Cleeves, Fast Track by Julie Garwood, and The Man in the Brown Suit by Christie. I spent last night having the oddest dreams thanks to all of those plots swirling around in my head. All were good although I didn't like Red Bones as much as the first two in the series. Not sure if I want to go on. Stacia, Julie Garwood is another romance author you might enjoy.
  21. I don't think the Calculus book is presented as AP level, but that question does cross most parents minds while their child is working through it. I actually came to WTM forums to figure this question out. At the time several experienced people told me kindly most likely no but that they had no real experience with Fred. Now I have experience. I would hate to have someone start LoF Calculus now planning to take the AP this coming spring. Dd's face when I handed her the review book after just Fred and a bit of supplements said very clearly not ready. As an introduction great but as the finished course with an AP, no. Fine as long as you mean for it to be an introduction or an end of math. We loved the Algebra, Geometry, and Trig books. Those courses are complete. imo
  22. Stacia, When looking for The Story of My Teeth I found all sorts of things, everything from autobiographies to zombies and vampires in most libraries. For some reason my library (my actual local system) just comes up with social service type reports involving abuse, teeth not in the title. No how to brush type books even...Not sure what that says about where I live? My neighbouring system is seems to be obsessed with brushing (not a bad thing), teeth need to be in the title there. It is odd how differently the search engines work. Neither system has the book unfortunately. Kareni Heather, Thanks for the update on your dad. Wow, going home so quickly.
  23. Heather :grouphug: What a dreadful experience. But his surgery is remarkable. Stacia, I can't find a hardcopy of The Story of My Teeth so will have to go with the kindle version. The search engines have really offered up some horrifying and depressing books when I type that title in. For some reason I always browse what comes up even when what I am looking for isn't there. I have started The Man in the Brown Suit. Good so far.
  24. I can actually get it from a library. The cover cracks me up...the teeth look pretty silly, dancing. Which considering the horrors of tooth pulling....
