  6. I found this wonderful link from someone on the WTM forums. The archeology magazine articles are really great and free! Thank you, whoever you are, for doing this! http://www.scribd.com/filfilksq/d/60373372-SOTW-and-Human-Odyssey We are going to do SOTW for my younger and HO for my older and watch some of the same documentaries and read some of the same supplemental readings. We start Monday :)
  7. I see a couple on CBD and Amazon. The one in the WTM book is out of print. What do y'all recommend? http://www.amazon.com/Outlining-taking-report-writing-skills/dp/0883138506/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1331226360&sr=8-2 http://www.amazon.com/REMEDIA-PUBLICATIONS-OUTLINING-GR-5-8/dp/B000QCBC2M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331224685&sr=8-1
  8. I am looking for historical fiction lists that would work for the Logic stage. I found a couple of websites by searching the forums but was wondering if there are any more. I especially like the ones that go by era or date. So I have: http://www.muni.org/Departments/library/kids/Documents/PREHISTORY.pdf http://homescool-ed.blogspot.com/2007/04/sonlight-books-arranged-by-well-trained.html Any more out there that would help me find historical fiction for my middle schooler going through The Human Odyssey and SOTW? Thank you!
  9. Here is another site to use broken down by age: http://homescool-ed.blogspot.com/2007/04/sonlight-books-arranged-by-well-trained.html
  10. Thanks, Bonnie. I had tried my library but they don't have it. I will try my local homeschooling yahoo group. I didn't even think about the Kingfisher encyclopedia. I guess I will have to check that too! LOL
  11. I just called Usborne and they themselves have no clue if the two books line up page to page so if someone has both and could let me know if I am going to be ok with this new one, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! :)
  12. I bought the recommended encyclopedias in SOTW AG but I am afraid I might have gotten one wrong. I have The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History with Internet Links (it is red and has a knight on the front) that was published in 2011. I also see now that there is Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History published in 2001. I did a random pick of pages from the AG and looked them up in the encyclopedia I own and they seem to match. Is my encyclopedia going to be ok for all four volumes of SOTW AG or do I need to get the other one to mae sure my readings match the AG? TIA!
  13. We are strict. The kids have a weekly agenda and they have to highlight what they have finished. If we have an appointment, friends coming over, etc, we let them do it but they have to finish that agenda by Sunday night. I haven't had a problem getting them to comply because I check all their work. I want my kids to know how to motivate themselves and they seem to be able to do it very well. They love to see their agenda with everything highlighted and will make up things on the weekend without my asking. It could change, though, when they are teenagers. If they are going to have a bad attitude or not doing their work, they will lose privileges.
  14. I would also like to know if their are any lesson plans or schedules out there so I don't have to reinvent the wheel, so to speak.
  15. Hi. We just discovered WTM and SOTW. For 2 years we have been doing Sonlight, which is not working for us. We want to start my dd (11) and DS (9) in the 4 year plan but we are almost done with 5th and 3rd grade. Is SOTW going to be enough for my dd for the next 4 years? She would be in 9th grade for her last year. I see many posts about supplementing and we do have some ideas: adding a biography of someone in the readings, outlining, and a small research paper every week on something that we have covered that week. I will have her read all the encyclopedia entries in the AG and and then another book on the subject or a historical fiction. For my ds, we are going to use the AG and some easy books since his reading comprehension is not great. We are planning on starting the curriculum as soon as it comes. Will it be enough to prepare dd for high school and college? She wants to stay homeschooled all through high school. TIA Jen
  16. Our 17 in is just huge and seems heavy and excessive. We like 15 in.
  17. I am looking for a secular science option with a strong or exclusive digital component. My dc love experiments. They will be in 4th and 6th grade in the summer when we start (9 and 11 yo). Have any of you used Supercharged Science eScience or HMH Science Fusion? Does Science Fusion have actual experiments that kids can do or only virtual labs? The website is not very detailed. We watched some Supercharged Science videos and my dc were very interested but it is quite expensive and I have heard from a lot of people that the experiment costs are high even though she says things are common. If you have any detailed information that could help me, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Jen
  18. We are moving next month to the DC area for 2-3 years and are going to be living in Centreville. Does anyone know of any co-ops, support groups or get togethers in the area? My ds is 9 and dd is 11. I am also looking for piano teacher, guitar teacher, cub scout pack and junior girls scout group. TIA for any help you can offer! Jen
  19. I agree with others that it is great for them to learn the rules. I am actually going to take my "natural speller" and start him over with AAS. He is getting confused as we get further into spelling. My dd has dyslexia/dysgraphia and has been doing AAS since September. She is now in Level 3 and I still need to go over the rules with her regularly or she "forgets" how to spell in her other work. I love AAS!
  20. I have seen people mention that they do Thames & Kosmos science kits with middle schoolers. My husband is a PhD and wants our kids (11 & 9) to get a good solid science understanding before the high school sciences. Both of my kids (and my husband) do really well if they get to do something tactile to help them understand. We were thinking of using Usborne books for science topics and then getting a T&K science kit to go with it. For example, I own Usborne's Electricity and Magnetism. We were thinking we could read that book then get a T&K magnet kit and a T&K electricity kit. The Thames & Kosmos site says their Chem 5000 kit, the largest one, is a good solid foundation for high school science. We thought it might be nice for them to choose topics that interest them, get the book and kit and make science really fun. Then, when my daughter is in 9th grade, start a textbook or computer based upper level science. Does this sound ridiculous or doable? Has anyone done it? TIA, Jen
