  1. I was in a public bathroom when a seemingly post-menopausal woman experienced a surprise visit. We were all sharing our stash of supplies and it didn't seem to be helping. Anyone else care to comment about their last period?
  2. Will you have this much for science every year? If so, does it have to be curriculum or can you buy some of the fun Klutz science books? I would also take a look at movingbeyondthepage.com science units. What about some of those pricey lego science education books that are such a big hit http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/characteristics/productType~Books
  3. The best advice I have ever seen on this and related topics, and something I wish I had understood when mine were little, is the habit of perfect execution. Please consider this approach described in two short blog posts with and as she says "start with a stroke, not a letter" http://higherupandfurtherin.blogspot.com/2006/04/habit-of-perfect-execution-part-1_5499.html http://higherupandfurtherin.blogspot.com/2006/04/habit-of-perfect-execution-part-2_7678.html She has a post about cursive too.
  4. Great idea! I nominate AimeeM. Really, you'd have fun doing it.
  5. If you read this book, did it scare you and make you paranoid? Would it be over the top for a teen who worries a little more than necessary?
  6. I've been perimenopausal for at least 5 years, with a few light but fairly regular periods this year (contrasted with the nightmare heavy ones that I hope to not revist.) This month my period was 3 weeks late and it is very, very light. No mood swings or insomnia this month either :) I'm so hopeful. Please, tell me what your last period was like.
  7. That is, formally in 9th grade with the school district or in your records. I'm asking because of a recent conversation on trends in our homeschool group and not seeking advice. This applies to your most recent average or bright 9th grader, but not accelerated children or children who start just some high school subjects early.
  8. I don't know the ages of your children, but we do half a meal before and the rest when they return home otherwise they want to eat an entire meal again when they walk in the door and that's not a good habit to develop. Eating two dinners would be fine for a growing teen boy who is involved in seriously intense sports, but for the others it will create problems. Our meals on sports days include foods that can keep or can be reheated easily so they can pick whatever part of their dinner they want to finish afterwards. This usually includes a salad, protein that can be easily reheated (dark meat chicken, stew type beef or chuck or meatballs), potatoes or pasta with a sauce or olive oil and a starchy veggie like corn or carrots. Those items keep well, reheat easily and don't lose flavor or become gluey. The starchy veggies provide the extra carbs they need. In the winter we lean more toward the crockpot meals that can keep like stew and broccoli & chicken with rice. In this case we have a 1 spoon policy. One big spoonful before the sports, one spoonful when they return. Of course quantities change for boys 12 and up.
  9. Some of my children live across the country and I'm not hurt or offended, however I would have been 10 years ago when I was a more self-centered version of myself.
  10. We have and use "Experiences" but it's just demonstration type experiments.
  11. A research based set of questions for the global learner, that starts with the big picture and works its way down to the details is what my 9th grader needs. Trisms isn't really global so I have never used it, but the research and fill in with short paragraphs that require some integration of material is the perfect fit for her. Any ideas? The one I looked at scienceforhighschool.com looks good, but it is similar to the questions that are at the end of the sections in our textbook and not quite what we need.
  12. Syllabus broken down by Subject, quarter (to be completed by) and week (no days listed, just boxes or circles to be checked) like this: Biology Quarter 1 (Must be completed by November 12) Week 1 O Read textbook pgs 13-20 O Watch "bozemanscience plant structure video" O Answer section questions p 21 O Pick research topic from those listed p 22 and begin research and so on. dc are expected to transfer those into his planner and if he chooses to do all of them in two days and spend the remaining week on the other subjects I let him. Some of my children would do each subject every day, but most of them would do blocks of work, focusing on just a few subjects each day or even alternating subjects by week. The Week is just a place holder, so they may be on Week 3 in science while they are doing Week 6 in history. Whatever. They fill in their planner Sunday night and I check it with the syllabus. This is also a reminder to me to collect any finished work from the previous week. Normally I grade their math daily and collect other work to grade or discuss on Wed and Fri. They are expected to bring me their history, literature and logic to discuss daily, but if they forget (and this happens often) I remember on Wed and Fri. Start with a plan that you and your child can live with and make adjustments from there, but have something set in stone by the end of October because consistency is so important and there isn't fudge-time in high school like their is in the lower grades.
  13. Have any of you found a cheap place to buy this? I want to donate 20-30 to a rescue mission this fall. Weird, I know, but it's actually an item on their request list and last year they didn't have enough.
  14. I did a diluted avc rinse and most of the frizz is gone. I almost never use conditioner and mostly wash every other day with very warm water and every 10 days with a small amount of bking soda paste. I'm more gray than not and while it was kinky when I was using shampoo, it's been silky since going no poo a few years ago. I'll admit to giving it a good shampoo every 4 or 5 months, mostly because I believe it must be dirty even though I know it's not, but I always-always regret it and am left with dry, kinky hair that resists conditioners.
  15. I'll trying increasing the vinegar first, good idea.
  16. I've no-pood for a few years and loved the way my gray hair was silky and smooth, but now it's frizzy and I really haven't changed my washing methods. Anyone have suggestions for dealing with frizzy hair?
  17. Yes, every year because I'm easily bored. The math and english stay constant, but everything else has to interest me first and then line up with the kid's needs and styles. However, I no longer switch mid-year if they struggle or are disinterested. We put it aside and try again a few weeks later.
  18. There were four in the pan and only one took on a neonish green color. The yolk stayed yellow. We tossed it.
  19. Went to pan fry an egg this morning and the whites started to get a green cast to it. I never saw this before and wish we still had chickens.
  20. I've bought my younger girls French Toast jumpers to wear when we're out and about and I want them to look nice http://www.frenchtoast.com/category/girls+school+uniforms/girls+school+uniform+jumpers.do?nType=2 I don't think they look uniformy, but they are uniforms. Lilies of the Field jumpers are adorable, very well made and affordable. Don't let the family photos on the other pages put you off, just focus on the jumpers http://liliesapparel.com/cgi-bin/ez-catalog/cat_display.cgi?account=X309466;search=jumpers;search=Jumpers;limit=category;v=2.0
  21. OK, I understand now. We didn't finish voyage practice and will be doing it with Level 4 instead of buying a new one. While I like them to learn the 4 level analysis, I have mine spend more time on traditional diagramming.
  22. We used MCT Voyage this year (Town last year) but I don't know what you mean by ML1. Can you write out the full title or include a link to ML1? I'll check back later.
